Biosciences is one of the very best departments in the UK with an outstanding reputation for excellence in teaching, research and employability of our students. Ranked Top 10 for impact in REF2014, the department provides a dynamic and interdisciplinary research environment, with the Denny group located within recently refurbished laboratories in the Centre for Global Infectious Diseases. This initiative is supported by a £7.8M Capacity Building Award from MRC GCRF.

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work on a GSK collaborative project:

"Deconvoluting the mode-of-action of novel anti-Chagas and anti-leishmanial compounds"

Caused by the insect-borne kinetoplastid protozoa Leishmania species and Trypanosoma cruzi, the Neglected Tropical Diseases leishmaniasis and Chagas disease represent a major and increasing threat to the health of individuals in the developing world. In the absence of vaccines, drugs are the mainstay of treatment and control. However, these are limited in number and efficacy, and have significant problems in administration and toxicity. To develop new therapies it is necessary to identify essential parasitic processes (drug targets) and compounds that disrupt these.

The start point for this project are 15 compounds identified by GSK as anti-kinetoplastid and having properties favourable for development, but for which the mode of action is unknown. This lack of knowledge hampers understanding and development, and within this project we will apply advanced molecular-genetic, biophysical and analytical technologies to reveal new modalities for drug discovery.

The post is fixed term for 6 months initially, with the possibility of extension, and the successful candidate will be working with Dr Paul Denny (PI) at Durham University.

Successful applicants will, ideally, be in post as soon as possible.

For informal enquiries please contact Dr Paul Denny p..

All enquiries will be treated in the strictest confidence.

We prefer to receive applications online via the Durham University Vacancies Site. https://www.dur.ac.uk/jobs/. As part of the application process, you should provide details of 3 (preferably academic/research) referees and the details of your current line manager so that we may seek an employment reference.

Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in the University .

The assessment for the post will include a candidate research presentation and a structured interview. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview and assessment on a date to be confirmed.
