About the role

The LAI sits within the Office of the Vice Chancellor and reports to the Chief of Staff.

The LAI is the custodian of the La Trobe University Art Collection, which has recently been valued in excess of $20M and has been described as “collections of historical, aesthetic/artistic, research/teaching and community significance”. Our award-winning LAI gallery is located in Bendigo and features two sculpture courtyards, a tiered auditorium, meeting room and an artist-in-residence apartment and studio. There is a strong indoor-outdoor relationship between spaces which provides a dynamic setting for staff, students, visiting artists and the public.

In this role you will be responsible for curatorial practice, collections management, and associated educational programming to a professional and critically rigorous standard, contributing to innovative research and learning outcomes. The Director will provide leadership to the existing team and identify opportunities for growth and development across the university raising La Trobe’s profile with our many university communities and stakeholders. They will also maintain an active and positive profile in the arts.

Skills & Experience

To be successful you will have;

  • Demonstrated experience in the arts and culture sector, preferably with second- or further-degree level qualifications (or equivalent standing in the arts and culture sector) and demonstrated experience in, or knowledge of, the Australian University sector
  • Highly developed communication skills with an ability to lead and motivate others, to resolve conflicts and to confer with peers in other institutions, to determine best practice approaches in program/service delivery.
  • Ability to demonstrate drive and integrity through a strong commitment to La Trobe’s cultural qualities (see below) and a demonstrated understanding of how this will support and enable the development and delivery of the Arts & Culture Strategy
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in the management of significant and potentially complex and challenging human and material resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and sustain collaborative relationships across the University, develop partnerships with diverse groups, individuals, communities and institutions, and actively guide the development of others.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage effectively and persuasively with senior colleagues through a superior ability to interact collegiality and negotiate effectively with a wide range of University stakeholders.
  • This role will require travel to and from regional campuses.
