Position Overview

The Curriculum Information Advisor provides expert advice and support to staff involved in the curriculum approval process and ensuresdata is valid, policy-compliant, configurable, accurate and consistent across ICT systems.  The incumbent is required to negotiate with staff across the University to resolve curriculum and academic calendar data and system configuration issues and to reviewcurriculum publications and ensure they are of a professional standard.

The Division of Student Life plays a critical role in driving and meeting the University’s objectives and strategic intent. Working closely with and across the Colleges and Divisions, and in collaboration with the Office of the Provost, the Division has a focus on cross-institutional academic quality, innovation in learning and teaching, efficiency of services, domestic recruitment, suitability of learning infrastructure, and overall student experience.

Student Services Directorate

The Student Services Directorate provides academic, administrative and student support services to the University community and is responsible for a large component of the non-academic domestic and international student experience at JCU. The Directorate plays a pivotal role in relation to the student experience, the ability of the University to meet its enrolment and financial targets and the reputation of the University.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Provide expert advice and support, and provide training to academic support staff responsible for amending curriculum information in relevant information systems.
  2. Assess and endorsechanges to curriculum data, in accordance with University curriculum approval policies and procedures, ensuring data is valid, configurable and compliant.
  3. Maintain study package version control and course structures within the Student Management System according to the architecture set by the Team Leader, referring complex issues to the Team Leader for direction.
  4. Determine field of education (FOE) codes for subjects based on subject descriptions and how they relate to the classification descriptors and communicate these decisions to the University community.
  5. Prepare and provide data for government reporting to Team Leader as required.
  6. Analyse and report on accuracy and consistency of configuration data across systems, identify problems with that data, provide solutions and communicate these to Team Leader and key stakeholders.
  7. Regularly review curriculum information (content and format) in the JCU web-based Course and Subject Handbook and CASM website, ensuring improvements are negotiated with key stakeholders as required.
  8. Identify and contribute to process improvement and quality control processes and development of business process documentation.
  9. Support the University's commitment to the principles of reconciliation, which exemplify respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and the valuing of justice and equity for all Australians.
  10. Demonstrate a commitment to the University values.
  11. Support the principles of the TropEco program and engage in commitment to JCU sustainability goals and objectives.

Generic Accountabilities

There are generic responsibilities that apply to all James Cook University staff.

  1. The Curriculum Information Advisor is required to observe the lawful and reasonable directions, policies and decisions of the University Council, understand and comply with the Enterprise Agreement, the Statutes and Rules of the University, the policies and decisions of the University Council and other appropriate University authorities, as in force from time to time.
  2. The Curriculum Information Advisoris required to demonstrate a personal commitment to ensure personal safety and the safety of others and contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. This includes the effective implementation and compliance with James Cook University WHS policies, procedures and safe systems of work, together with all relevant legislation, duties and obligations. Contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance.
  3. The Curriculum Information Advisor is required to exercise proper discretion in all matters affecting the well-being of the University which involve public writing or speaking in accordance with the University’s Code of Conduct.

Selection Criteria

Selection and appointments will be assessed against selection criteria.

Essential

  1. Completion of a degree in business administration, writing or other relevant field, with at least 2 years subsequent relevant experience in the higher education sector; or extensive knowledge and experience in administration; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education and/ortraining.
  2. Demonstrated ability to analyse complex data, identify problems, raise issues and provide solutions with proven capacity for innovation and the ability to adapt business processes to meet changing needs.
  3. Sound negotiation and interpersonal skills and an ability to liaise with staff across a broad range of system related matters whilst maintaining positive client relationships.
  4. Demonstrated well developed editing and proof reading skills with good command of written English.
  5. Excellent organisational and time management skills with proven attention to detail.
  6. Strong computer literacy skills with proven ability to operate business support software e.g. advanced word processing and spread sheeting and the ability to adapt to new technologies.

Desirable

  1. Demonstrated detailed knowledge of the University’s curriculum policies and approval processes and their implementation within the student information systems.
  2. Familiarity with student administration and/or student information systems in the higher education sector.
