Applications are invited for the post of Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Particle Physics in the Department of Physics.

This is a post in the Dark Matter and Neutrino group to work on detector development and dark matter direct detection experiment.  The group is active in the current DEAP-3600 and LZ dark matter direct detection experiments, in the next-generation DarkSide-20k experiment, and in the T2K and DUNE long-baseline neutrino oscillation programmes. In dark matter experiments the group’s focus is on photodetection, calibration, and development of WIMP search analysis tools. The group has a broad detector development programme, as part of which we are engaged in developing app-based silicon detector readout for biosensor devices, with application to measuring lead contamination in drinking water, with support from the Global Challenges Research Fund.

This post will involve working with a team applying multidisciplinary skills in the general areas of physics analysis, software development, and hardware design, construction, and operation. The aim of this work is to contribute to construction and commissioning of the DarkSide-20k experiment’s Si photosensor system, and to develop the silicon detector readout application to environmental monitoring of lead detection in drinking water.

The holder of this post will be expected to help produce independent and original research within the RHUL Centre for Particle Physics, to submit publications to refereed journals, and to work together with and supervise PhD and MSci students.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in Experimental Particle Physics or a closely related area, as well as prior experience relevant to one or more of the following: (I) low-background experimentation; (ii) design, simulation, construction, and/or analysis of detector photosensor systems; (iii) experience of design or operation of small cryogenics systems; or, (iv) applications programming.

This is a full time post, available from March 1, 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter for a fixed term period of 24 months at Royal Holloway, University of London, with the possiblity of extension for a further 12 months. The post is based in Egham, Surrey where the College is situated in a beautiful, leafy campus near to Windsor Great Park and within commuting distance from London.
