Position Overview

The Associate Lecturer, Accounting is responsible for teaching in both undergraduate and graduate diploma programs at JCU. The incumbent will be required to: perform duties in and associated with lecturing and tutoring, guided subject development, and non-complex subject coordination; provide input into associated curriculum; undertake marking of student assignments and examinations, and engage in student consultations. The Associate Lecturer, Accounting will also engage in scholarship related to teaching and learning; assist with the administration duties within the discipline and the College; liaise with professional bodies; and fully participate in College activities such as marketing events.

The Office of the Division of Tropical Environments and Societies provides collaborative leadership with the Colleges and ensures that the Colleges are able to deliver the core business of learning and teaching, research and engagement and contribute effectively to the strategic agenda. The Division office drives the strategic objectives of the Division and services a proportion of College administrative operations.

As part of the Division of Tropical Environments and Societies, the College of Business, Law and Governance promotes, fosters, supports and administers quality teaching and research at JCU in the areas of Business and Law.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Facilitate effective undergraduate, graduate diploma and (where qualified) other postgraduate student learning via lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials (including face-to-face, online and multi-modal), and thereby fostering a positive student experience, this to include guided preparation of learning resources; delivery or discussion of content; and marking of formative and summative assessment, all within required procedures and timeframes.
  2. Provide consultation and academic advice, support and encouragement to students.
  3. Engage in scholarship that will support and enhance preparation for the effective carrying out of teaching duties and responsibilities.
  4. Perform administrative functions primarily connected with the subjects in which the appointee teaches, and otherwise participate in limited administrative service to the College and Division as requested by the Dean of College, including membership of relevant committees.
  5. Establish and/or maintain a connection with professional and/or community organisations relevant to the discipline.
  6. Support the University's commitment to the principles of reconciliation, which exemplify respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and the valuing of justice and equity for all Australians.
  7. Demonstrate a commitment to the University values.
  8. Support the principles of the TropEco program and engage in commitment to JCU sustainability goals and objectives.

Generic Accountabilities

There are generic responsibilities that apply to all James Cook University staff.

  1. The Associate Lecturer, Accounting is required to observe the lawful and reasonable directions, policies and decisions of the University Council, understand and comply with the Enterprise Agreement, the Statutes and Rules of the University, the policies and decisions of the University Council and other appropriate University authorities, as in force from time to time.
  2. The Associate Lecturer, Accounting is required to demonstrate a personal commitment to ensure personal safety and the safety of others and contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. This includes the effective implementation and compliance with James Cook University WHS policies, procedures and safe systems of work, together with all relevant legislation, duties and obligations. Contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance.
  3. The Associate Lecturer, Accounting is required to exercise proper discretion in all matters affecting the well-being of the University which involve public writing or speaking in accordance with the University’s Code of Conduct.

Special Conditions

It is a requirement of this position to travel to other JCU campuses as required.

Selection Criteria

Selection and appointments will be assessed against selection criteria.

Essential

  1. Attainment of an Honours degree (or higher qualification) in Accounting and/or Finance and/or professional experience deemed equivalent or sufficiently relevant to the position.
  2. Demonstrated enthusiasm for, and evidence of capacity and affinity to engage in, high quality teaching of undergraduate students in the disciplines of accounting and/or finance.
  3. Demonstrated evidence of experience with, comfort in utilising, and enthusiasm to engage with, contemporary educational technologies and teaching methodologies, including online delivery and blended learning. Demonstrated potential and evident willingness to undertake scholarly activities related to teaching and learning in the discipline.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team in a cooperative and collegial manner to support the interests of both the Accounting discipline and the College as a whole.
  5. Demonstrated high level written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.

Desirable

  1. The ability to liaise with high schools and encourage high school students to study accounting, finance and/or financial advising at a tertiary level.
  2. The ability to teach in Financial Advising.
