We enter the world with a set of genes that determine many factors of our health. From that moment forward, every aspect of our lives affects our health. There is unequivocal evidence that social, environmental, and behavioral factors are by far and away the strongest predictors of health and disease. Founded in 2015, the Center for Population Health Sciences’ mission is to improve individual and population health by bringing together diverse disciplines and data to understand and address these factors. The Associate Director of Strategic Initiatives, under the direction of the faculty director and executive director, will develop, implement, and administer PHS’ vision, strategy, and goals.

The AD, playing a role that cuts across all PHS groups, is an important member of the senior team. She/he will have the opportunity to lead some of PHS’ most exciting projects and initiatives with the support of a collegial and talented team.

One of PHS’ strategic goals is to increase the number of transdisciplinary PHS-related research projects across the university.

The AD will create, execute, and evaluate a large portfolio of dynamic research programs (e.g., seminar series, seed grant program, visiting scholar’s program, etc.).

Many of our research programs leverage PHS’ unique data platform. The AD will be responsible for:

  • Managing data vendor relationships, developing and implementing systems to ensure PHS adheres to applicable regulations and that deliverables are met on time
  • Centralizing resources available to data users
  • PHS recently launched a satellite center in India. The AD will support the growth of the center. At this stage of its maturity, this involves identifying and addressing complex administrative and logistical issues, successfully launching our initial portfolio of projects, establishing/nurturing partnerships, and identifying new research opportunities.

The AD will lead PHS’ internal monitoring and evaluation efforts. She/he will collect key performance metrics from each group, analyze the data, and present findings/make recommendations to the senior team.

The AD will support the development of grant, foundation, and donor proposals (e.g. writing and/or editing proposals, developing proposal budgets, coordinating large proposals involving multiple faculty). The AD may also support post-award activities.

The AD will be responsible for developing and implementing PHS’ faculty communications plan. This involves overseeing:

  • PHS’ web site
  • Development of core PHS collateral
  • Faculty events and meetings
  • Production of PHS’ newsletter & events mailers

  • Strong research operations/administration skills (preferably within a university setting)
  • Curious about a variety of research topics and easily able to grasp the principles/concepts related to different research areas
  • Exceptional interpersonal and managerial skills

Bachelor's degree and three or more years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience. Advanced degree may be required for some programs. For jobs with financial responsibilities, experience managing a budget and developing financial plans.


  • Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources.
  • Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
  • Ability to oversee and direct staff.
  • Basic knowledge of managing budgets and developing financial plans.


For teaching jobs, advanced degree or certification may be required for some programs.


  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
