Stanford Medicine is seeking a creative and responsive Web Services Librarian (Librarian I or II) to oversee Lane Library’s web presence. S/he will coordinate, plan, develop, maintain and evaluate Lane Library’s web presence, including, Lane Web, integrated web applications and user interfaces. As a member of the Research and Instruction Team the web services librarian will take part in instruction and liaison activities serving select departments in the School of Medicine, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (LPCH) and Stanford Health Care (SHC). 

Reporting to the Director Research and Academic  Collaboration,  the Web Services Librarian will collaborate with the Knowledge Integration Unit and the Resource Management Unit.  S/he will be a key member of Lane Library’s Web Redesign Team, providing and evaluating user research to directly impact the website and related online services, evaluating and recommending tools and software to enhance and further develop Lane’s web site as well as managing redesign processes. 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and development of Lane Library’s web presence: Coordinate workflows, set guidelines and ensure that Lane’s web presence is up-to-date, accurate, user-centered and accessible.
  • Manage interface customizations and the integration of commercial and open source library applications. Maintain Lane brand throughout web infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with library staff to develop and deliver content for the web site and improve user interfaces. Train staff to produce web content.
  • Manage content management system and related systems.
  • Develop a coherent user experience for web-based library resources and services. Lead usability testing, analytics and assessment of the Library’s web site and integrated products.
  • Maintain current knowledge of trends and best practices as they impact medical and academic libraries.
  • Develops and maintains appropriate reports, documentation and records

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):  

Advanced Degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries and two or more years of relevant experiences in a relevant library setting or a combination of education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Experience with relevant aspects of library operations including understanding of contemporary library practices, trends and emerging technologies.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the broad scope of library operations with ability to understand how their role interacts with the rest of the organization.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and negotiate issues with people from different parts of the library. 
  • Ability to identify challenges and opportunities, engage others in their resolution and recommend appropriate courses of action.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate online resources in terms of content quality, functionality and user interface issues.
  • Ability to independently perform complex job functions such as collection management reviews, preparation of major exhibits, developing policies for business practices.
  • Consistent display of strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated bibliographic expertise or basic managerial/supervisory skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasps lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).
  • Rarely use a telephone, operate hand controls.
  • Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

May work in confined spaces and at height 4-10 feet; be exposed to dust and mold; work extended hours, evenings and weekends

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An ALA accredited MLS or MLIS degree, or an advanced degree in education, design, or computer science.
  • Proven experience with web design utilizing HTML, CSS and scripting languages.
  • Experience with web authoring tools and content management systems.
  • Knowledge of web accessibility standards including responsive design.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Understanding, appreciation of and experience with the goals of higher education and academic medicine.
  • Strong commitment to continuous service improvement and innovation.
  • Demonstrated success in engaging with colleagues across the University and beyond in a collaborative and construction fashion.
  • Ability to manage projects, develop policies or drive library initiatives across functional lines.
  • Evidence of engagement in relevant professional or academic communities.
  • Previous experience working in a health sciences library.
  • Experience with Springshare’s LibApps
  • Ability to write effectively for the web and create documentation for library staff
