ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/ PROFESSOR AND HEAD OF DEPARTMENT (ONE POST)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for the Department Nursing Sciences of matching the expectations of the UP 2025 Strategic Plan:

  • To increase access, throughput and diversity;

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

  • A PhD in Nursing Sciences;
  • Registration with the South African nursing Council as a professional nurse and midwife;
  • A qualification in nursing education and nursing management
  • At least 12 accredited publications preferably in ISI journals
  • Five years teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Evidence of Masters and PhD  supervision;

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: PROFESSOR

  • A PhD in Nursing Sciences;
  • Registration with the South African nursing Council as a professional nurse and midwife;
  • A qualification in nursing education and nursing management
  • At least 20 accredited publications preferably in ISI journals
  • Nine years teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Evidence of Masters and PhD  supervision;

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Good verbal and written communication skills;
  • Good interpersonal and mentoring skills;
  • Good computer skills;
  • Scientific writing skills
  • Leadership and management skills and experience.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Experience in the teaching and learning of undergraduate students at an academic institution;
  • Experience in the teaching and learning of postgraduate students at an academic institution;
  • A good track record of publications in accredited journals;
  • NRF Rating is preferred or evidence of being an established researcher;
  • Proven academic capabilities (postgraduate supervision, research, service learning and community engagement);

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

Although candidates will be appointed permanently as Professor or Associate Professor, the headship is a fixed-term appointment of four years. Preference will be given to the incumbent for re-appointment for a second term if they are available for appointment.
