Who we are:
The University Architect / Campus Planning and Design office (UA/CPD) is a team of design and planning professionals who ensure an integrated and sustainable approach toward the long-term planning and management of Stanford's land, buildings, and historic resources. We advise the senior administration and the board of trustees in these areas, particularly as they relate to the central academic campus.

Who is the Campus Planner / Architect
The Campus Planner /Architect position will support the architecture and campus planning work in the office of the University Architect/Campus Planning & Design (UA/CPD) and is suited for a design professional interested in applying their talents within an academic environment. As stewards of the campus and student environment, the role of the UA/CPD office includes developing long-range campus planning strategies, planning and siting new buildings, developing site/design guidelines for the design of new buildings, guidelines for the preservation of historic buildings, and advocating responsible stewardship of the land through sustainable design.

The Campus Planner /Architect will represent UA/CPD in planning and executing design and campus design guidelines for a variety of capital and maintenance projects in collaboration with other LBRE departments. The Campus Planner /Architect will work with the UA/CPD team as an architect to provide design and technical expertise and develop graphic design and planning presentations.

Core Duties:
Collaboration with the UA/CPD team to develop Campus Master Plans, building/site design guidelines, conceptual designs for specific campus improvement projects, and written/graphic reports on various aspects of Stanford University's campus and lands.

Communication with various Stanford University constituents such as school facilities representatives, faculty, user groups, student life organizations, residential & dining leadership and internal LBRE colleagues such as university facilities operations, parking and transportation services, project managers, capital planning representatives, zone managers and construction managers.

Representation on specific project teams to convey campus planning and architectural concepts on individual building projects. Develop and monitor guidelines and standards throughout the design process from formulation through construction and collaborate with colleagues and consultants to deliver outstanding project results.

Representation during construction to ensure that the design intent and quality of construction is maintained as per agreed standards. This will include attending regular project meetings to provide design and technical recommendations. It will also include regular review of plans, specifications and mock-ups for sound architectural design, conformance with design guidelines, pertinent codes or standards, sustainability, and other related criteria.

Provide expertise to create a long-term maintenance vision for Stanford University properties, which includes researching Stanford University’s architectural history and style, participating in feasibility analysis and implementation of cyclical maintenance and preservation projects to integrate sustainable best practices into designs, and the preparation of jurisdictional required documentation.

Support with graphics for historic analysis, reports, site and architectural designs, and presentations for the Board of Trustees, Stanford constituency, and community. Graphic support includes production of deliverables in AutoCAD, Photoshop, Illustrator, PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Sketch Up.

Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in architecture, and/or Urban Design, with more than five years of directly related experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

Communication skills: Ability to clearly and concisely present key campus planning concepts and building designs to key university constituents, professional consultants, and UA/CPD employees in both written and verbal formats.

Facilitation skills: Ability to facilitate working groups to bring to consensus concepts and ideas with key university constituents, and professional consultants.

Field supervision by setting quality control standards: Ability to guide and communicate recommendations to the consultants. This includes setting quality standards through mock-ups and control samples.

Strategic skills: Ability to understand the attributes of Stanford University’s campus architecture (contemporary and historical) and convey how it informs planning and architectural solutions.

Experience in higher education, historic preservation, and/or housing is a plus.

Specific training: Architecture and Design, Computer skills (Word, Excel, AutoCAD, Power Point, Photoshop, and Illustrator), historic research.

Certifications and Licenses:
CA architecture license a plus.
