About the Job

For this role, the research will involve observational studies of the high-redshift intergalactic/circumgalactic medium using large optical/near-IR telescopes. Specific research outcomes arising from this appointment include the analysis and publication of data from a European Southern Observatory Large Project on high redshift quasars together with international collaborators. Measuring the evolution of metals across the history of the Universe is a key outcome for ASTRO 3D. The research will be in collaboration with A/Prof Emma Ryan-Weber. The appointee will be supported in their career development and encouraged to conduct independent research and work collaboratively within the ASTRO 3D Galaxy Evolution Project, including with Prof Kim-Vy Tran (UNSW), Prof Lisa Kewley (ANU), Prof Karl Glazebrook and Prof Darren Croton and other staff within the Centre of Astrophysics and Supercomputing.

The Swinburne Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing is part of the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology. The Centre currently has over 20 academic staff, approximately 20 postdocs and 40 PhD students and is committed to excellence in basic research, public outreach and education and the commercial applications of supercomputing. Centre staff and postdocs have institutional access to the world-class 10-metre W.M. Keck telescopes. The Centre operates a national supercomputing facility, the Theoretical Astrophysical Observatory as well as access to state-of-the-art 3D visualization facilities.

About you

To be successful in the role, you will have:

  • A PhD in observational astrophysics, with research interests and experience in high redshift galaxy or intergalactic/ circumgalactic medium observations using large optical/ near-IR telescopes
  • Experience and knowledge of high redshift galaxy and intergalactic/ circumgalactic medium astrophysics
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively and cooperatively with others in a team environment
  • Demonstrated research skills through publication track record in peer-reviewed journals
