As part of the Tenure Track Programme of the German Federal Government and the Federal States, the TU Dresden, Faculty of Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies, Institute of English and American Studies invites applications for the

Junior Professorship (W1) in North American Literature with a Focus on Future Studies (with tenure track to W2)

with a four year contract as a temporary public official, to be filled not later than October 1st 2020. After a positive interim evalu­ation, the employment will be extended to a total of 6 years. In the fifth year, a faculty-wide and school-wide commission will evaluate the achievements of the candidate in terms of a tenure evaluation. Following a positive evaluation, a permanent Chair (W2) of North American Literature with a Focus on Future Studies will be granted without a renewed selection process. Evaluation criteria, mutually agreed upon when the position is accepted, will form the basis of the evaluation procedures. Essential elements of the evaluations will be academic success in form of publishing regularly in peer-reviewed journals and anthologies, the successful acquisition of third-party research funds, active participation in collaborative projects within the university, the organization of at least one international conference, active participation in didactic measures for higher education, involvement in the field of knowledge transfer as well as positively evaluated teaching performance in English at the level of a W1 Junior Professorship.

During the temporary Junior Professorship, the holder of the position must prove that she/he is capable of fulfilling all of the research and teaching requirements in the field of North American literature, including its historical perspective. We prefer candidates with a cultural studies orientation who are familiar with interdisciplinary research contexts. The successful candidate needs to have specialized in at least one area of American Studies that addresses futurological questions (posthumanism, human-machine interaction, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, Technoscience, Speculative Fiction, Environmental Studies, Sustainability). We prefer candidates with experiences in international settings and in acquiring third-party funds. In addition to cooperation with other chairs at the Institute of English and American Studies, the applicant is expected to be involved in interdisciplinary and cross-faculty research, in particular through input for existing teaching and research alliances at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and through active participation in establishing new research collaborations in the Research Priority Area “Culture and Societal Change”.  The successful candidate will be required to teach 4 academic hours per week. One of the main tasks in teaching is to work in the English-American Studies degree programs, including teaching English to Education students. We welcome involvement in developing new courses and interdisciplinary teaching. Active participation in academic self-administration and in the academic committees of the faculty is required.

Requirements for an appointment are a completed university degree, pedagogical suitability, a particular aptitude for academic work, usually accounted for by the outstanding quality of a doctorate/PhD. We seek outstanding candidates in an early phase of their academic career. Applicants must fulfil the employment qualification requirements of § 63 of the Act on the Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education in the Free State of Saxony (SächsHSFG) and should be in an early stage of their post-doc phase. Candidates who hold a TUD PhD (or equivalent) must have worked for at least two years in a research position outside of TU Dresden to be eligible.
