Stanford Medical Center Development supports Stanford Medicine, which includes the School of Medicine, a premier research-intensive medical school, and Stanford Health Care, an adult hospital that is nationally recognized for quality patient care and leading-edge technology.  We also work in collaboration and coordination with development at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford.

We seek experienced candidates, with strong preference for those with sponsored research experience or knowledge, for a Development Officer position on the Corporate, Foundation, and Association Relations (CFAR) team. CFAR works closely with faculty and administrators to facilitate and manage philanthropic engagement with corporate, foundation, and association constituents. Our work spans the medical enterprise and requires active and collaborative work with many allied campus offices, including the central development office, sponsored research and tech licensing/industrial contracts. You will be responsible for the corporate and/or foundation program at the university level or within a larger school or unit. You will operate independently in assigned areas with responsibility for a portfolio of corporate, foundation, and association funders, including some of the university or school’s most important corporate and/or foundation and association prospects. Portfolio responsibilities include prospect identification, cultivation and solicitation, proposal development, and coordination of internal support activities.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Leading and managing the corporate and/or foundation program or programmatic elements within the university or unit, both fundraising and/or operational.
  • Managing coordination of high potential entities and oversee multiple-interest prospect strategy that may be executed by other colleagues.
  • Managing an active portfolio of some of the university or school’s most important corporate and/or foundation prospects to cultivate, solicit, and steward their support, which may include gifts, affiliate memberships, sponsored research, and/or in-kind donations.
  • Working with faculty, corporate, foundation and association representatives, volunteers, and university staff to raise financial support from corporations, foundations, and associations. Balancing faculty and funder goals while complying with university research and development policies; advocating for policy changes when warranted.
  • Developing, maintaining and enhancing relationships with corporate, foundation, and association funders. Creating strategies and proposals. Identifying and responding to opportunities for support from corporations, foundations, and associations, seeking alignment between donor interests and university needs.
  • Responsibility for a wide range of fundraising activities, including maintaining an active level of contacts, coordinating campus visits, leading outreach to institutional prospects, providing stewardship, identifying new prospective donors, and facilitating relationships between potential and current donors and faculty and students.
  • Prioritizing prospects, preparing background information and following up with faculty to ensure completion of agreed upon actions.
  • Working closely with other university offices (e.g., sponsored research, industrial contracts, general counsel), in order to collaborate effectively with external funders and ensure proposals and agreements comply with university policy.
  • Providing information and advice to inform university policy decisions in response to changing faculty needs and/or funder landscape.
  • Possibly managing employees, program activities and/or operations to achieve goals and vision of the organization.
  • Operating as development director with oversight for university and/or unit objectives, as assigned.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Sponsored research experience and knowledge (strongly preferred).
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in corporate and/or foundation prospect identification, relationship building, and solicitation.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring and working with volunteers, faculty, and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a program and/or team. Demonstrated ability to work within a complex environment and with competing university and funder agendas.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills, with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to articulate a compelling case for philanthropic support programs.
  • Ability to translate complex concepts into compelling development proposals.
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, top executives, and community leaders.
  • Advanced ability with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills including conflict resolution.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a California Non-commercial Class driver’s license.
  • Valid passport for international travel.

Physical Requirements*:

  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, sit, and use a telephone, stand/walk.
  • Occasionally light/fine grasping, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds, writing by hand.

Working Conditions:
