Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Professor/Associate Professor in Chinese History and Culture in the School of Chinese (Ref.: 499263), to commence on September 1, 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract.  Direct tenure may be offered to an outstanding candidate.

The School values a strong commitment to the development of innovative research paradigms and pedagogical approaches. Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Chinese history or related areas. They should pursue an active agenda of research and publication in the broad spectrum of Chinese historical and cultural studies in (i) the early imperial period; (ii) the medieval period; or (iii) the late imperial period. Strong evidence of intellectual leadership in the field at an international level is expected. Primary teaching responsibilities will be at the undergraduate level, but the appointees will also be expected to supervise M.Phil. dissertations and Ph.D. projects. The successful candidates should have native or near-native fluency in both Chinese and English, and be able to develop and conduct courses in imperial Chinese history.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.  The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15% of basic salary.  Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
