The Department of Sociology
The Department of Sociology has a long history of excellence, drawing on an interdisciplinary approach to the study of social issues in Hong Kong, China, and the world. It has a diverse body of teaching faculty, adopting a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives, particularly using qualitative and ethnographic methods. It offers undergraduate majors in Sociology, Criminology, and Media and Cultural Studies. In addition to research postgraduate degrees, it also offers two taught postgraduate programmes in Criminology and Media, Culture, and Creative Cities. The Faculty has identified three broad research clusters, namely (1) Contemporary China: Social, political, and spatial transformation; (2) Cities 2050: Urbanisation, sustainability, and mobility; and (3) Mental Wellness: From brain to society. In addition, the Faculty values diverse research methodologies, and is particularly committed to upgrading our expertise in quantitative methods. Applications are invited for appointment as Professor, to commence as soon as possible, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. Direct tenure may be offered to outstanding candidates, subject to approval. The appointment as Head of Department will be made for an initial three-year term, renewable subject to mutual agreement.
Founded 50 years ago, the Department is looking for a visionary leader to help take it into its second half-century. We seek a scholar of the highest academic credentials who has a commitment to helping build a community of scholars. The area of research expertise is open but the appointee should have the experience and capability required to lead the Department. The appointee will lead strategic planning within the Department to deliver positive outcomes across our research and teaching programmes. He/She will bring energy, experience in leadership and administration, and strong interpersonal skills to the role. The appointee will be responsible for both strategic and operational leadership within the Department, and contribute a significant voice in the leadership structure of the Faculty. He/She will ensure, through effective leadership and coordination, that the activities of the Department are in alignment with the Faculty’s strategic research areas.
A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
