Associate Professor Jessica Cohen at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health is seeking a post-doctoral fellow to work with her on several projects related to malaria and maternal and child health in Africa. This work will explore patient and provider behavior related to malaria and other common childhood illnesses, combining a variety of methods and approaches from public health and economics. It will also involve collaboration on an impact evaluation of a malaria control intervention in Tanzania.

Dr. Cohen has conducted a number of field trials in East Africa related to incentives to patients and providers to increase malaria treatment seeking and prevention and to caregivers to improve child nutrition. She has also conducted studies using clinical observations of sick child visits and inter-disciplinary work bringing together behavioral economics and malaria transmission modeling.

She is seeking a highly-motivated and capable post-doctoral researcher with an interest in inter-disciplinary research on malaria (and child health more broadly) as well as maternal and newborn health care quality in Africa. The analyses will be predominantly quantitative and will use data from field trials, household surveys, and clinical observation. An important part of the role will be collaboration on a field study of a malaria control intervention in Tanzania and candidate must be willing to travel to oversee field work (roughly 3-4 times over the year for 2-3 weeks at a time). The successful candidate will have an opportunity to collaborate on research papers and to develop and extend skills in developing study protocols, drafting grant proposals, designing research instruments, creating analytical frameworks and preparing manuscripts for publication.

Basic Qualifications

Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent in economics, epidemiology, public health, health policy and/or management, global health, public policy or a related field.

Candidates should also have the following:

1. strong quantitative and analytical skills
2. research experience
3. high-level interpersonal and organizational skills
4. demonstrated ability to work independently.

Training in (aspects of) both economics and public health is desirable. The position is based in Boston and is for one year, with the potential for renewal for an additional one to two years.
