Post Doctoral Fellow, Biomedical Engineering
Organization Name Biomedical Engineering
The newly-established Khalifa University of Science and Technology (KU) combines the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MI), the Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research (KUSTAR) and the Petroleum Institute (PI) into one world-class, research-intensive institution, seamlessly integrating research and education to produce world leaders and critical thinkers in applied science and engineering. Khalifa University endeavors to be a leader among research intensive universities of the 21st century, while catalyzing the growth of Abu Dhabi and the UAE’s rapidly developing knowledge economy.
A Post-Doctoral Fellow will join the research group to work on two main projects that are supported by grants. The first is to develop a bio mimetic micro-fluidic chip for pharmaceutical research, and the second (supported internally by HEIC) is to develop a nanotechnology-based drug delivery system for cardiovascular applications. The post-doc’s work will heavily involve micro-fabrication, biological experiments, and data analysis.
The Post-Doctoral Research Fellow appointment is for a limited period of ten months (March – December 2019),extendable based on research budget availability.
The Post-Doctoral Research Fellow will provide support and undertake internationally competitive research and development on industrially relevant problems, aiming to provide innovative solutions, intellectual property and high quality peer reviewed publications,thereby contributing to the academic and research mission of the university.
Contribute to the development of a biomimetic chip to study the effect of the drug candidates on the immune system in-vitro;
Contribute to the synthesis or utilization of gold nanoparticles with different sizes and shapes;
Perform biological experiments in the Cell Culture and Tissue Engineering lab related to pharmaceutical research and supporting both projects;
Participates in scientific research as a professionally responsible member of the research team, participates in problem exploration and definition, planning of the approach and sequence of steps, execution of experiments and studies, interpretation of findings, documentation and reporting of results and progress, maintenance of research records and compliance to all established policies and procedures;
Contributes to the overall activities of the research team as required;
Publishes research results in high quality journals appropriate to the field in a timely manner;
Since the Postdoctoral experience is transitional to becoming an independent researcher or faculty member, the Post-Doctoral Research Fellow will strive to acquire the varied skills necessary to advance their career with guidance from the Supervisor. These skills include, but are not limited to, the ability to present research plans and findings in a convincing style, both in oral and written modes of communication, the ability to understand research group management and supervision of others, the ability to establish contacts and network with colleagues pursuing a similar research agenda, the ability to organize and teach a class or a course if more inclined towards a teaching career.
- Previous experience as research assistant/teaching assistant is highly preferred
- Previous experience as engineer in the industry is a plus
- In-depth experience with micro fabrication and microfluidics is a must
- Good knowledge of microscopy and cell culture techniques is expected
- Excellent English writing and communication skills
- PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related fields.
