The Opportunity

The purpose of this project, titled: “Artistically rethinking creative coding for digital media”, is to research original design solutions and develop working technologies, through prototypes, showcase works and proofs of concept, that support creative media arts practitioners to create sound and light artworks. The project will apply interaction design research to better understand what demands, constraints and opportunities guide creative practice in this space. It will use practice-based research to develop exemplary creative artworks demonstrating the project outcomes.

The Research Associate (RA) will be co-located between UNSW Art and Design, and BitScope Designs, and will assist with developing the BitScope technology, conducting research into algorithms and user interfaces. The RA will bring expertise in computer science and HCI to the research-focused creation of new technology, implementing and testing successful algorithms and user interface designs. The RA will work closely with a team of engineers, artists and design researchers towards the project’s goals, which includes the production of creative audio visual installation artworks

  • Salary: A $95,449- $102,091 + 17% superannuation & Annual Leave loading ( Pro rata) 
  • Fixed-term, 30 months 
  • Part-time- 3 days per week (with the possibility to increase to full time)  
  • Location: Paddington Campus – Sydney, Australia

RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Collaboratively develop creative coding tools.
  • Collaboratively develop a realtime engine for creative coding of multiple Raspberry Pis.
  • Contribute to the design, implementation, debugging and assembly of hardware prototypes.
  • Assist with the coordination of research activities and actively contribute to research outputs to meet project milestones.
  • Conduct experiments and core research and write research papers.
  • Contribute to the delivery of media art installations
