About the Positions

The School of Communication is in a phase of expansion and renewal and seeks three academic positions at Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, or Associate Professor level who can develop and teach subjects in the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate courses, contribute to the research in the Digital Media Research Centre, and supervise higher degree research students.

The successful candidates will demonstrate a well-developed philosophy for their teaching and learning, be actively engaged with the latest technological and methodological developments in their area of research, and show a commitment to social inclusion and cultural diversity in their teaching and research. The School is interested in strengthening its Indigenous and its Asia Pacific regional perspectives across all its areas of teaching and research.

The positions are aligned with the School’s disciplinary strengths and core teaching programs: the Bachelor of Communication and the Master of Digital Communication. Please indicate in your application which position(s) you are applying for.

Two (2) Positions in Digital Media/ Media and Entertainment Industries:

The undergraduate major in Digital Media and the Master of Digital Communication focus on the digital transformation of media production and consumption as well as the social and cultural impacts of digital media technologies. The Media and Entertainment Industries major focuses on the significant transformations affecting the ways media content is developed, disseminated, and consumed around the world.

We are interested in strengthening our capacity in pedagogical innovation and one or more of the following research and teaching areas (both undergraduate and postgraduate coursework): complementarity between digital communication and media industry studies; the future of digital media platforms, industries, and economies; critical data studies and digital methods; social media; algorithmic culture; emergent business practices and branding strategies; policy developments in music and other entertainment industries. Expertise in audience analytics and also social media industries and platforms in Asian contexts will be advantageous

One (1) Position in Journalism / Professional Communication. The Professional Communication and Journalism majors focus on creating compelling, social engaged journalism and professional communication, using both cutting edge tools and traditional narrative techniques. We are interested in strengthening our capacity in innovative, digital-first approaches to learning and teaching and in one or more of the following research and teaching areas: corporate writing and communication, science communication, organisational communication, multi-platform journalism, journalistic ethics, data-driven journalism, investigative and international journalism.

These positions report to the Head of the School of Communication (or delegate) for supervision, workload management, and for Performance Planning and Review (PPR).

Key responsibilities

  • Facilitate excellence in the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate courses through the development and delivery of innovative teaching methods and materials.
  • Prepare and deliver physical and virtual lectures and seminars for effective learning outcomes.
  • Provide authentic real world learning and assessment. Undertake excellent research that is aligned with the Digital Media Research Centre’s research priorities and that produces high quality outcomes.
  • Pursue opportunities for external research funding, collaborate on and initiate grant applications.
  • Contribute to QUT’s research culture through internal and external collaborations including those with international partners. Supervise postgraduate and other students’ research projects.
  • Engage with industry, government and the community to advance research impact.
  • Connect with the professional community and lead and influence your profession and discipline.
  • Implement and administer University policy within the School with respect to equitable access to education and workplace health and safety.

The successful candidates will be appointed at Lecturer Level B, Senior Lecturer Level C, or Associate Professor Level D depending on their level of attainment against the position classification standards outlined in the QUT Enterprise Agreement (Academic Staff).

These appointments will be offered on an ongoing, full-time basis.

Selection Criteria

  1. Doctoral qualification in a discipline relevant to the research and teaching needs of the School.
  2. Inspirational teaching and major contributions to the quality of student learning (all levels). For Level C and D, demonstrated leadership in innovative approaches to learning and teaching as well as successful supervision of higher degree research students.
  3. High impact and high quality research, informed by collaboration, partnership, and technology (all levels). Proven research record evidenced by high-quality publications. For Level C, research leadership of national significance. For Level D, an international research reputation and attainment of competitive research funding.
  4. Demonstrated understanding and experience in using digital approaches, methods, and tools in research, teaching or industry practice in the relevant area(s). (E.g. data-driven journalism, social media analytics.)
  5. Demonstrated success in collaborating with partners across disciplines and with industry, community, or government. For Level D, international collaborations are advantageous.
  6. Demonstrated highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to contribute to a dynamic, high-performance and collaborative academic culture.

Remuneration and Benefits

The classification for this position is:

Academic Level B (Lecturer) which has an annual remuneration range of $AUD112,918 to $AUD134,104 pa. Which is inclusive of an annual salary range of $AUD95,417 to $AUD113,320 pa, 17% superannuation and 17.5% recreation leave loading;

Academic Level C (Senior Lecturer) which has an annual remuneration range of $AUD138,331 to $AUD159,524 pa. Which is inclusive of an annual salary range of $AUD116,892 to $AUD134,800 pa, 17% superannuation and 17.5% recreation leave loading.

Academic Level D (Associate Professor) which has an annual remuneration range of $AUD166,556 to $AUD183,506 pa. Which is inclusive of an annual salary range of $AUD140,742 to $AUD155,065 pa, 17% superannuation and 17.5% recreation leave loading;
