About the position

The Department of geography is advertising a permanent position as Associate Professor in human geography, specializing in Geographic information science and systems.

The position reports to Head of Department.

Main duties and responsibilities

Staff at the Department of Geography run and are involved in several research projects where applications of GIS are central. The successful applicant is expected to both run projects and initiate new research activities, including actively recruiting PhD candidates. He or she will also have the right and obligation to carry out research within his/her academic field, including to contribute to, and develop the relevant research groups and strategic fields at the Department. He or she will be jointly responsible for academic matters together with academic as well as administrative staff in the Department. 

The successful applicant will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and undertake supervision of master’s and doctoral candidates. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated.  

The successful applicant will have a specific responsibility for teaching GIS at bachelor, master and PhD levels at the Department of Geography. She or he will also be required to contribute to courses where GIS is applied within different contexts. The Associate Professor will participate in work connected to student exams without special remuneration. 

Qualification requirements

The successful applicant must demonstrate a strong research record in geographic information science and systems (such as geographic visualisation, spatial analysis, or remote sensing) applied to one or more of the departments four strategic areas.The position of Associate Professor requires the completed and approved scholarship/PhD program equal to a Norwegian PhD degree in human geography or equivalalent. 

Applicants with documented ability to publish in recognized international scientific journals are preferred. In the evaluation process, scientific work from the past five years excluding statutory leave will be given particular weight, as will be the ability to obtain external research funding. Emphasis will be placed on ability and experience in initiating and leading research and development of the field of area. 

Other requirements:

Those who do not have formal qualifications in teaching at university level and who cannot provide documentation of equivalent qualifications must complete an approved pedagogical development programme within two years of appointment.

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of Associate Professor code 1011 is normally from NOK 523.000,- before tax per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. 

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The person appointed must live in a location enabling him/her to be present at and available to the institution.

About the application

The best qualified applicants will then be considered by an external appointments panel and the most suitable applicants will be invited to interview and to deliver a lecture to undergraduate students.
