Estates and campus services plays a key role in ensuring the University’s expansive campus in Strawberry Hill meets the needs of 6,000 students and staff. The department manages the campus environment and building stock, employing approximately 120 staff who deal with everything from designing and constructing a building to making sure it is cleaned, well maintained and secure.

We have an important part to play in supporting St Mary’s future growth. Currently, the estate is in four main parts; this includes Naylor library (about ten minutes’ walk from the main campus), which complements the facilities in our main campus library with an additional 300 study spaces, printed library resources and a café.

Our Teddington Lock sports ground, situated near the River Thames, provides an excellent setting for a variety of sports and boasts a multifunctional floodlit all-weather pitch, three grass football pitches, rugby pitches and two cricket squares, in addition to two pavilions, teaching spaces and changing facilities.

Also The Exchange owned by Richmond Council and leased to St Mary's University under an agreement that the building will be used for a mixture of University use, Community Group use and public events. The building has a 300 seat theatre, 5 studio rooms, a cafe and a bar. It is the building directly opposite the entrance to Twickenham station 15 minutes’ walk from main campus.

As the Carpentry and Joinery Maintenance Technician, you will be part of the Estates maintenance team and report to the Maintenance Manager. The nature of this role is such that the post holder will at times be entrusted with a high degree of autonomy in order to allow organisation and progression of daily workloads. The post holder is required to demonstrate how their organisation makes the best use of time and resources in order to achieve effective repairs and works, with minimum disruption, to a high standard and be supported by daily completion and return of general administration to the Maintenance Helpdesk.

This role compliments the maintenance team by providing professional carpentry, joinery and other technical maintenance duties to support the estates day-to-day, cyclical and planned maintenance needs. The role will also require the technician to undertake various other minor installations and or modifications to support the team. These duties include but are not limited to tiling, basic electrical works, general plumbing, painting, window and block repairs and flooring.

Successful applicants will need

  •  Fully qualified carpenter, with City & Guilds, NVQ or Apprenticeship in Carpentry.
  • Demonstrable experience in a similar role.
  • Ability to carry out Domestic Repairs and Maintenance, including carrying out tiling,   carpentry, basic electrical skills, plumbing, painting, window repairs, lock repairs, fixing hardwood doors, frames, skirting’s and flooring etc.
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate positively and effectively.
  • Well organised
  • Ability to work well in a team context and also with minimal supervision
  • Willingness and ability to become familiar with and work within University Guidelines
  • Strong Health & Safety awareness• Full clean driving licence
