DEPARTMENT OF PRACTICAL THEOLOGY

PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR AND HEAD OF DEPARTMENT (ONE POST)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate must already be appointed at the level of Associate Professor or Professor and will be responsible for:

  • The strategic, academic and operational management of the Department;
  • Planning, organising, managing and promoting academic and research programmes and the Department’s research profile;
  • Ensuring scholarly academic and professional education and training;
  • Recruit skilled and talented staff for the Department;
  • Playing an active role as academic leader of the discipline at a national and international level;
  • Marketing and growing the Department at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Fundraising for departmental activities.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Associate Professor:

  • A relevant doctoral degree;
  • At least 5 years’ tertiary experience or relating teaching experience;
  • At least 6-8 publications in a variety of accredited journals
  • Evidence of successful research Master’s supervision (at least 5 successfully completed) and if possible evidence of successful Doctoral supervision.

Professor:

  • A relevant doctoral degree;
  • At least 8 years’ tertiary teaching experience;
  • At least 10-15 publications in a variety of accredited journals of which 5 of the publication should be ISI/IBSS journals;
  • Evidence of successful research Master’s supervision (at least 10 successfully completed) and evidence of at least 2 successful doctoral supervision.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

Associate Professor:

  • Proven managerial experience at a tertiary institution;
  • Recognised academic status in the relevant discipline of which a suitable NRF rating  will serve as a strong indication;
  • Experience of curriculum development and record of curriculum innovation;
  • Experience in high-level liaison with internal and external stakeholders and professional boards.

Professor:

  • Proven managerial experience at a tertiary institution;

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

Although candidates will be appointed permanently as Professor or Associate Professor, the headship is a fixed-term appointment of four years. Preference will be given to the incumbent for re-appointment for a second term if they are available for appointment.
