Overview:

The Project is interdisciplinary involving the Biological and Experimental Psychology Dept. QMUL (https://www.qmul.ac.uk/sbcs/about-us/our-departments/psychology/) and the Psychology Division (UCL) (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/pals/) and the Turing institute (https://www.turing.ac.uk/) and Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) (https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/defence-science-and-technology-laboratory).  

We invite applications for a Research Assistant, based at QMUL Biological and Experimental Psychology Dept. working in the Dynamic Learning and decision-making lab (www.magdaosman.co.uk), to support a project investigating ways of improving the communication of uncertainty in defence decision-making contexts. The post holder will be embedded within a vibrant research environment with access to facilities and expertise across QMUL, UCL and Turing Institute, as well as experts in defence (DSTL). The post holder will be Supervised by Dr Magda Osman (QMUL, Turing) and Dr Adam Harris (UCL) (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/lagnado-lab/adamharris.html).

The project is funded by Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL). The post holder will be required work on the project with DSTL, and utilise their facilities and expertise to ensure that the project is rooted in genuine uncertain decision-making contexts that defence officers face. The main research activities will be conducted at Mile End Campus, Queen Mary University of London, but the post holder will have the opportunity to work across multiple sites and spend time gaining valuable insights at the DSTL (Porton Down) and Turing Institute (Euston, London).

The successful candidate should hold a degree (or equivalent qualification/experience) in decision sciences, cognitive science, mathematical psychology, machine learning. Experience of experimental design and programming experiments is essential.  Candidates must also have experience of conducting research and hold a strong record of publications in the domain of decision making.

The purpose of the project is to undertake research investigations in collaboration with and under the supervision of the investigators in order to realise the objectives of the project.

The purpose of this project is to address the challenge of what proposals should be made for new methods of representing and communicating uncertainties that intuitively complement and enhance the way decisions are made in defence contexts.

The post is part-time for 30 hours per week and is fixed term for 18 months.  The expected start date is December 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.  The post is a Grade 4 research post (spine point 24). The salary is £31,613 pro rata and is inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave (pro rata) and a pension scheme.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
