Overview:

Queen Mary University of London is one of the UK’s leading research-focused universities and a member of the Russell Group with an outstanding reputation in the humanities and social sciences.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for the appointment of a Postdoctoral Research Assistant for 3.5 years as part of an ERC Advanced Grant “STUDIOTEC”, which will examine the history of European film studios 1930-1960, including their architectures, infrastructures, practices, professional and technical personnel.

The successful candidate will be expected to assist in conducting research on French film studios in relation to the project’s four themes: 1) Architecture and Infrastructure, 2) Creativity, Practices and Innovation, 3) Politics and Economics, 4) Professional and Labour Relations. In addition, the role-holder will work with the project’s other team members investigating how artistic practices responded to transnational flows in film studio expertise, comparing how studio spaces, practices, designs and technical innovations changed over time.

Applicants should have a PhD (or equivalent qualification/experience) in Film Studies or History or another field closely related to project’s themes and expertise in archival research methods.  Strong written and verbal French and English language skills are an essential requirement of the post. The appointee will be based in London and will travel to France to conduct primary research at regular stages in the project.  The appointee will work under the supervision of Professor Sue Harris, and in collaboration with the other project team members based at the Universities of Bristol and Southampton.

The post is a full time, fixed-term appointment for 3.5 years, with an expected start date of 1st March 2020 and end date of 31st August 2023. Starting salary will be £34,220 per annum. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.

The School welcomes applications from ethnic minority candidates, as they are currently under-represented in the School.
