Job description

The University of Central Lancashire has made a major investment in engineering research, teaching and knowledge transfer with industry through the development of a new Engineering Innovation Centre at the Preston campus.  This investment will exploit our location at the centre of one of the most important engineering/manufacturing areas in the UK and establish UCLan as a leading university for developing engineering innovation with industry.

We are seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer in Quantity Surveying to support the School in delivering its commitments to teaching, research and income generation in the area of quantity surveying. The post holder will be responsible for the development, promotion, and operation of a postgraduate quantity-surveying degree including the recruitment, administration, and efficient running of the degree programme.

The successful applicant will have industrial experience in quantity surveying and an ability to develop research activity, or a successful track record of research. A BSc or MSc in Quantity Surveying (or similar construction related subject) and membership of a relevant professional institution are essential requirements for the role. Teaching experience in Higher Education with the ability to teach across all levels in the area of Quantity Surveying is also required. A PhD in an appropriate subject is desirable.

The School of Engineering has also been successful in the franchising of construction related courses overseas, particularly in Quantity Surveying. As such, the post holder will be responsible for overseeing the running of these courses, requiring the successful applicant to work overseas for short periods of time. Utilising excellent communication skills, the successful applicant will have an ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and to be able to develop links and opportunities with industrial partners.

Applicants need to meet all essential criteria on the person specification to be considered for interview. This position is based in Preston.

The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) was founded in Preston in 1828 as the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge.  Since those early days it has transitioned into one of the UK’s leading, modern universities with a student body comprising some 120 nations and an overall learning community approaching 38,000.

Throughout its development ‘Ex solo ad solem’, or in translation, ‘From the Earth to the Sun’, has been its motto – helping talented people from all walks of life to make the most of their potential. Staff at UCLan pride themselves on putting the needs of students at the centre of everything they do and in 2014 this shared core value was highlighted when the University achieved IIP Gold status.

In 2015 the Centre for World University Rankings placed UCLan in the top 3.8 percent of all worldwide universities and over the coming years UCLan’s £200 million Campus Masterplan development will create a truly world-class educational environment that will propel the University to new levels of excellence.
