Closing date: 01-Dec-2019

Overview:

The Centre for Cancer Prevention is at the forefront of international research into the prevention and control of cancer. We have particularly active research programmes in breast, endometrial, cervical, colorectal and prostate cancer prevention, cancer screening and statistical methods for clinical trials and epidemiology.

There are increasing moves to replace one-size-fits-all screening for breast cancer by risk-adapted screening, in which both the frequency with which women are screened and the modality are chosen based on risk.  The aim of this project is to develop an artificial intelligence system to aid risk-stratified screening, by assessing risk of cancer at screening risk of masking due to breast density and long-term risk of breast cancer following a negative screen.  The aim is to use information from digital mammograms for risk assessment. Different methods will be assessed, including classifiers based on textural features and convolutional neural network models.

The postdoctoral data scientist at QMUL will lead the research into long-term risk of breast cancer based on digital mammography and risk of masking. They will coordinate and analyse results from an extensive external validation exercise, where algorithms developed during the project will be compared with those from collaborators and elsewhere. The researcher will participate in research relating to the best methods to apply to these data, and work in collaboration with a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Warwick.

The project is funded by Cancer Research UK and is in partnership with the Data Science group at WMG, University of Warwick, and several collaborators in Europe and the USA.

The post is a full time, fixed-term appointment for 3 years.  Starting salary will be in the range of £38,084 - £44,807 per annum inclusive of London Allowance.  Benefits include 30 days annual leave and staff pension scheme.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.

The Centre for Cancer Prevention requires applicants to provide all certificates at interview to confirm their qualifications (as specified in the Job Description).

Informal enquiries should be addressed to Dr Adam Brentnall at a.brentnall@qmul.ac.uk.
