ENGLISH LANGUAGE CENTRE

Director of English Language Centre (Ref. 19051601-IE)

The English Language Centre (ELC) offers credit-bearing English language subjects and language enhancement programmes to students from all Faculties and Schools within the University.  It also offers general education and service learning subjects as well as subjects for postgraduate research students, and coordinates a number of student-led extra-curricular activity clubs.  The Centre currently has over 80 academic/teaching staff members, with about 25 technical, research and administrative personnel.  The ELC has a strong commitment to quality learning and teaching.  Please visit the Centre’s website at http://elc.polyu.edu.hk/  for more information.

The University is now inviting applications and nominations for the post of Director of English Language Centre. The position calls for a visionary leader with responsibilities of ensuring the smooth and successful operation and sustainable development of the Centre.  Reporting directly to the Dean of Faculty of Humanities, the appointee will be required to (a) provide effective leadership in the development of long-term strategies and plans of the Centre, in alignment with the University’s Strategic Plan, and provide leadership, coaching and support to all staff members in the Centre in pursuit of planned objectives in a high-quality and cost-effective manner; (b) oversee and manage all businesses of the Centre including the delivery of subjects that it offers; (c) ensure optimal deployment of human, financial and other resources in the Centre; (d) represent the Centre to liaise with the Centre’s stakeholders for the planning and delivery of ELC subjects; (e) take a leading role in the Centre’s curriculum-design and pedagogies functions and other academic and scholarly initiatives; (f) engage in a full range of activities related to teaching and learning, including preparing and developing materials, designing teaching and assessment strategies, delivering teaching in settings appropriate for the objective of learning, interacting with and motivating students, and assessing the performance of and giving feedback to students; (g) ensure the quality and relevance of the Centre’s teaching activities; and (h) undertake administrative duties in academic and departmental affairs.

Applicants should have (a) a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline with not less than ten years of post-qualification tertiary teaching experience; or a master’s degree in a relevant discipline with not less than fifteen years of post-qualification tertiary teaching experience. Preference will be given to those with a doctoral degree; (b) a demonstrably strong commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarly activities and professional service; (c) proven administrative and management capabilities, excellent leadership, interpersonal, communication and team-building skills; (d) considerable experience of, and demonstration of competence in, the coordination / management of teaching and learning activity at tertiary level; (e) good knowledge of higher education environment in Hong Kong; and (f) a high proficiency in spoken and written English.

Remuneration and Conditions of Service

A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered.  Initial appointment will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract.  Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.  Applicants should state their current and expected salary in the application.
