A new National Child Mortality Database (NCMD) has been developed that aims to reduce premature mortality by analysing data on all deaths in children in England, aged between birth and their 18^th birthday.

Around 4000, children and adolescents die every year before their 19th birthday in England. The UK has an excessive infant and child mortality rate compared to other EU countries with similar economies and healthcare systems. Understanding children’s deaths and translating that learning into actions to reduce potentially avoidable deaths is of central importance and is why NHS England has prioritised establishing a national child mortality database.

The NCMD programme and its associated workstreams are being led by the University of Bristol, in collaboration with University of Oxford, UCLPartners and QES. The NCMD is funded and commissioned by Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP) on behalf of NHS England and works closely with Child Death Overview Panels (CDOPs) which review all child deaths in England. The data will be analysed at the Child Mortality Data Unit at the University of Bristol and will be used to inform strategic improvements in health and social care for children in England and to help health and social care providers to learn about how they can reduce child deaths.

We are looking for a senior communications officer who has experience of leading communications and engagement in complex organisations either at a national or local level, e.g. the NHS, central government and / or local authority. You would be passionate about promoting communication excellence, a team player and have an interest in improving the lives of young people. 

It is the first time anywhere in the world where detailed information on all causes of child mortality will be collected and reported on a national level.  This is an exciting opportunity to join a small, but very dynamic team who are passionate about improving the life and health of young people in England. Please note that this is an open-ended role part-time role with 21 hours per week with funding end date 31/03/2022.
