Job description

Following a large rise in student recruitment, the School of Physical Sciences and Computing at UCLan is seeking to appoint four new lecturers to support the Computing delivery at our Preston Campus.  This is a unique opportunity to join an expanding team of enthusiastic research-focused academics in the heart of Lancashire – close to the sea and Lake District with excellent transport links.

At UCLan, Computing offers a range of taught courses from Foundation to Masters Level.  We teach degrees in Forensic Computing, Networks and Security, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Games Development, UX and Agile Software. Apprenticeships are already delivered at the Preston Campus and more are under development. Computing at UCLan is home to the internationally active Child Computer Interaction group (ChiCI), the largest such research group in the world, focussing on HCI and UX with younger users. Computing also leads the newly-formed inter-disciplinary Lancashire Research Centre for Digital Life. We are keen to grow research in the areas of Security and Digital Forensics, Software Engineering, AI and Data Science, following recent investment in a Professorial position.

We are looking to appoint enthusiastic individuals who are student focused and research minded. Applicants should be willing to teach a variety of modules aligned with their expertise, to supervise student projects, and to participate in high quality, impactful research aligned to the Research Centre and research teams. Most importantly, we are looking for team players who are adaptable and passionate.  With effective communication skills, you will demonstrate that you can teach, supervise, support and enthuse our students about computing. An honours degree in Computing (or similar subject) is essential, as is a higher degree, normally at Doctoral level, in an appropriate or related discipline - or commensurate professional experience. The ability to participate in outreach activities with local school and in industry is essential, along with the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively.

Applications should be made using the standard UCLan application form, but should be accompanied by a CV that details both your experience as a teacher (include courses and modules taught and indicate your contribution), as a researcher (include recent publications as well as any grants applied for and gained) and relevant industrial experience as appropriate. Please email your CV to HResources@uclan.ac.uk.

As an inclusive University, we particularly encourage applications from women and under-represented groups.

In 2019 the Centre for World University Rankings placed UCLan in the top six percent of all worldwide universities. We are the second highest riser in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2020.

For an informal discussion on any of these points, or for any further information, potential applicants may contact the Head of School, Professor Derek Ward-Thompson, either by email on dward-thompson@uclan.ac.uk or by telephone on +44-(0)1772-893829.

Applicants need to meet all essential criteria on the person specification to be considered for interview. This position is based in Preston.

Please apply online via www.uclan.ac.uk/jobs; if you cannot apply online please contact Human Resources on 01772 892324 and quoting the reference number. CVs will not be considered unless accompanied by a completed application form.

UCLan Values

Company

The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) was founded in Preston in 1828 as the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge.  Since those early days it has transitioned into one of the UK’s leading, modern universities with a student body comprising some 120 nations and an overall learning community approaching 38,000.

Throughout its development ‘Ex solo ad solem’, or in translation, ‘From the Earth to the Sun’, has been its motto – helping talented people from all walks of life to make the most of their potential. Staff at UCLan pride themselves on putting the needs of students at the centre of everything they do and in 2014 this shared core value was highlighted when the University achieved IIP Gold status.

In 2015 the Centre for World University Rankings placed UCLan in the top 3.8 percent of all worldwide universities and over the coming years UCLan’s £200 million Campus Masterplan development will create a truly world-class educational environment that will propel the University to new levels of excellence.
