- Full-time, fixed term 12-month contract. Base salary: $74k-$101k p.a. (Level A) plus annual leave loading and a generous employer’s contribution to superannuation.
About the opportunity
This role combines a unique opportunity to be a part of a team pioneering open source drug discovery and its application to citizen science, and science communication and education. This role will primarily involve synthesis of biologically active targets for the treatment of diseases with low market incentives (e.g. malaria, mycetoma and tuberculosis) and coordination of the Breaking Good Project – a distributed citizen science project where young people are involved in open source drug discovery research.

This unique role will require you to synthesise new drug candidates, to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students in the research laboratory, and to liaise with high school students and their mentors. Your leadership and administrative responsibilities will include helping to manage the lab and mentor students, plus additional, general administration and organisational leadership of the project. The successful candidate will have relevant experience in educational and/or science communication research methodologies in addition to experience with synthesis, isolation, purification and characterisation of new chemical compounds.

- Proficiency in the use of: NMR, IR, and MS for characterising organic compounds.
- Publishing of research as sole author or in collaboration.
- Ability to supervise students at the undergraduate and graduate level, and capacity to extend this to supervising high school students.
