The post is funded by the British Heart Foundation to study the molecular basis of regulation of contractility in the heart, using structural and mechanical measurements on isolated heart muscle cells. Dynamic changes in the structures of the contractile and regulatory proteins during the heartbeat will be characterized using X-ray diffraction measurements at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (Grenoble, France). In addition to participating in those experiments, the successful candidate will contribute to the implementation of the experimental setup and the software tools for analysis of the X-ray data.

The successful candidate is expected to have a PhD in Experimental Physics, Biophysics, Physiology or related subjects. Experience in image analysis and/or an interest in biomedical and particularly cardiovascular science would be advantageous. The candidate should be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs may be considered. Should the successful candidate be awaiting the award of their PhD, the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spinal point 30 with the title of Research Assistant until confirmation of the award of the PhD has been received. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6, spine point 31.

This post will be offered on a fixed term contract for two years and 10 months.

This is a full-time post.

The selection process will include a panel interview.
