Phd Position within Geophysical Monitoring of Underground Storage of Co2

Employer
NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY - NTNU
Location
Trondheim, Norway
Closing date
20 Nov 2019

About the position

A PhD fellowship in CO2 monitoring is available at the Department of Electronic Systems at NTNU. The successful candidate will be offered for up to a 4-year position with 25% work assignment for the Department. The work place will be Trondheim.

The PhD position is part of the ACT-project DIGIMON (Digital Monitoring of CO2 storage projects). Various European universities and research organizations participate in the project, in addition to four industrial companies. The position is financed by the Norwegian Research Council (CLIMIT programme).

The position reports to head of department

Main duties and responsibilities

The main topics of the project are use of conventional geophysical data as well as exploiting recent developments in DAS (Distributed Acoustic Sensing) fibre optic data. A crucial part of all subsurface CO2 storage projects is to monitor and secure that the injected CO2 stays within the planned storage volume. A key objective is to develop cost-effective monitoring systems, enabling early warning of minor leaks through the cap rock, which can lead to mitigation actions. The focus will be on mathematical and geophysical analysis of various types of monitoring data. A major goal is to achieve a better understanding of the physical coupling mechanisms for an optical fibre that is trenched into the seabed as well as for conventional seismic sensors. Use of mathematical inversion techniques to enhance the interpretation of time-lapse geophysical data is another key activity in the project. This position requires a good knowledge in geophysics and/or mathematics/physics.
