Position Focus:

Under the direction and supervision of the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, the Director is responsible for the day to day operations of the Office of Student Affairs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for the day to day operations of the Office of Student Affairs. In conjunction with the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, develop Student Affairs policies and procedures. Oversee the work performed by the Student Affairs Office Assistant and the Student Journal Office Assistant. Serve as liaison to counterparts in other administrative offices in the Law School and University for collaboration on projects. Responsible for managing the Student Affairs office budget including student organization accounts, travel, and conferences expenses. Refine reimbursement process for student organizations as needed. Maintain spreadsheets where necessary and generate budget reports as needed. Oversee the administration of the student organizations. Inform student leaders on policies, procedures, and regulations; provide support for events while fostering institutional memory for student organizations. Gauge success/progress of student organizations.

Counsel and advise leaders and members of over 60 diverse student organizations as well as student conference organizers. Oversee the administration of the student-run law journals. Primarily responsible for Student Affairs events at the Law School. Work with the Dean of Finance to address special funding requests and issues. Chair the Zelia P. Reubhausen Student Fund committee that, along with student representatives, awards grants to students with new student ideas and initiatives. Assist in managing logistics in response to student personal emergencies. Implement student outreach initiatives, especially in the area of wellness and community service. Work closely with Associate Dean of Student Affairs to create and implement new programming and initiatives that focus on Quality of Life. Develop mechanisms for student feedback as appropriate. Chair the student-run conference committee.

Refine policies and processes for student organizations and journals. Create and/or update Student Organizations Handbook and New Student Guide as well as other student life materials. Responsible for working with Student Representatives on governance issues throughout academic year. Assist with event planning for student reps. Manage external communication by maintaining the Student Affairs presence on the Yale Law School website and create new content to highlight policies, programming, and other initiatives as needed. Manage internal communication by maintaining the Student Affairs presence on Yale Connect and other internal sites. Perform analysis and project management as needed.

Essential Duties

  1. Plans and executes admission, financial aid, internship, and career services programs. Prepares and submits recommendations to admissions and financial aid committees. Plans and cultivates new corporate relationships to generate job opportunities both domestically and internationally.
  2. Participates in long-range planning; recommends and contributes to the development of career services, financial aid, and admissions policies.
  3. Provides guidance, advices and counseling on academic, admissions, financial , and career services matters to students and prospective students. Works with students, alumni and employers to identify existing and emerging employment opportunities.
  4. Develops and analyzes statistical data to determine patterns and trends that impact and inform the direction of the admissions or financial aid. Conducts ongoing research on employment trends and evolving industry-specific recruiting and talent management needs.
  5. Develops budgets and loan repayment schedules.
  6. Develops systems for admissions and financial aid activities. Leads projects to continuously improve use of technology.
  7. Writes publications to inform students of developments within financial aid and admissions offices.
  8. Organizes and conducts corporate presentations, networking nights, and career fairs. Guide employers in developing and executing on-and off campus strategies for attracting University talent.
  9. Supervises and trains a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees.
  10. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field and five years of experience in a related area or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Exceptional communication, writing and interpersonal skills. Proven organizational skills and ability to prioritize own work under pressure. Ability to work with frequent interruptions.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Experience with financial spreadsheets and budget monitoring. Excellent word processing and mail merge skills as well as Word, Eudora and Excel. Ability to deal effectively with all levels of students, staff and faculty.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Project management and analytical skills. Prior experience coordinating large, multi-faceted events. Proven record of good judgment and effective decision-making under pressure. Proven record of effective teamwork.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Familiarity with law schools or other higher educational institutions; advanced degree strongly preferred.
