University of Chester,
Executive Dean of Medicine

The University of Chester is one of the oldest higher education providers in England. We are rooted in the communities we serve and are proud of the care we take in preparing students for a full and valuable role in society. Since gaining University status in 2005, the institution has seen significant investment and expansion, with provision of a diverse and innovative curriculum to more than 20,000 students, across nine locations including Chester, Warrington and Shrewsbury. We are recognised for our excellence in learning and teaching, as evidenced by our TEF Silver Award, and have a demonstrable commitment to widening participation, developing world-leading and applied research, and strong private and public sector collaborations.

For generations, the University has made a significant contribution to responding to the healthcare needs of a growing and changing population, notably through nursing, midwifery, health visiting, and social work from undergraduate to doctoral study. Our ambition to train and retain doctors in the region is a natural development, built on a tradition of educational provision which is respected for its experience, expertise and excellence.

Building upon the success of the biomedical and life sciences provision, Chester Medical School (‘CMS’) is now developing and delivering medical practice courses. The portfolio of programmes and doctoral supervision encompasses a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. CMS also works closely with our Faculty of Health and Social Care and an inter-disciplinary approach to teaching and learning throughout programmes continues to develop.

CMS is now looking for an outstanding Executive Dean to lead the School in realising its ambition of delivering an MBChB programme. It has the necessary expertise to organise, deliver and enhance a high quality medical curriculum; an excellent reputation for teaching professions allied to medicine; and has developed excellent working relationships with the regional healthcare community.

This is an exciting opportunity for the successful candidate to make their mark at a crucial stage of CMS’s growth. Reporting into our newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eunice Simmons, the Executive Dean will have responsibility for all curricular, pastoral and regulatory matters. A key member of the University’s Senior Leadership Team they will also bring the requisite intellectual capacity, commercial acumen, strategic expertise and track record of delivery to drive forward the University’s wider ambitions during a period of unprecedented opportunity for the higher education sector.
