The Stanford Cancer Institute’s Tissue Bank seeks a candidate for a One Year Fixed Term Tissue Technician position, covering an afternoon/evening shift. The role of the Tissue Bank is to consent patients, collect samples and make those samples available to cancer researchers. The Tissue Technician will be responsible for collecting, grossing and banking surgical specimens and blood collections. The Tissue Technician will also be responsible for tracking inventory by entering the collections into the OnCore database in a timely manner. Other duties include performing basic histological techniques and maintaining laboratory supplies.

Job Purpose:

Perform skilled laboratory procedures in life science laboratories. Work with a great deal of independence and often serve as a technical resource for the laboratory. Perform a combination of skilled and highly skilled work, and/or skilled work with significant training and coordinative responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

The Technician at the III level is required to have a higher degree of skill than the LST II (for independently performing highly skilled work) and sufficient knowledge of skilled procedures that s/he is able to troubleshoot problems which arise in either equipment or procedures. Technicians may also have highly specialized expertise in a particular technical area, or experience coordinating a variety of technical activities in a lab.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Three years’ experience at the Life Science Technician II level or equivalent combination of equivalent academic background and relevant work experience (e.g., three years of college science coursework).

Job Duties include:

  • Procure, examine, process and bank tissue specimens from surgery or autopsy
  • Organize tissue collection documents and enter specimen collections into the OnCore database. Verify data entries for accuracy and compliance with IRB guidelines
  • Perform tissue sectioning (frozen, paraffin) and staining

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently; perform highly skilled work and make decisions in a high pressure environment
  • Ability to learn, understand and follow strict protocol for managing data
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Competence using MS Word and Excel
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to enter data in a precise and timely manner
  • Ability to use good judgment and discretion

Desired:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences or a related field
  • Prior experience with EPIC and OnCore database
  • Experience with basic histology techniques and laboratory maintenance

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand.
  • Ability to stand and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Occasionally lift and handle materials up to 10 pounds
  • Rarely carry/pull and/or push up to 20 pounds
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Position may require repetitive motion.

Working Conditions:

  • Afternoon/evening shift (11:30am-8pm)
  • Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending on research, may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gasses, or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.
