University Library And Collections

Administrative Support
Grade 5, £22,417 - £25,941

The Collections team, under the leadership of the Head of Collections, has broad responsibility for the acquisition, cataloguing, management, preservation and conservation of collections, including modern print and electronic collections, archives and rare books. Their work also includes the administration of reading lists, inter-library loan, and the provision of searchroom and enquiry services for archives and special collections. Their expertise and collections knowledge (alongside colleagues across the department, for example in our museums team) are used in support of learning, teaching, research and public engagement activities.

The library and archives of the Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre were gifted to Durham University in December 2018. The library contains mostly devotional literature in French and English, with some in volumes in Latin, Italian and Spanish. Many volumes are in contemporary bindings – showing signs of heavy use and historic repairs – or contain ownership information or annotations. Nearly all volumes contain custodial information in the form of bookplates, stamps and inscriptions, with additional annotations and ephemeral material giving evidence of use and circulation among the Canonesses’ community over time.

The purpose of this role is to unlock the potential of this collection by cataloguing c. 650 printed volumes, dating from the late 16th to the early 20th century into the University Library’s Library Management System, including copy-specific information such as provenance, bindings and annotations and to share your findings with a variety of internal and external audiences.

Although this project post will not require you to undertake regular search room duties, there may be occasions where you may be asked to provide short periods of cover.

This role is Full Time and Fixed Term for 9 months

Closes midday on :     14-Oct-2019
