Position Focus:

Reporting to, and with the Senior Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations, serve as the public face of the Yale School of Management (Yale SOM) to its alumni community. Oversee a broad portfolio of programming to connect and engage Yale SOM alumni with one another, with alumni from the Yale community, and alumni of the Global Network for Advanced Management Schools (GNAM). Direct, manage, coach, and develop a team of alumni relations staff, providing them with supervision, guidance, and mentoring. Develop and oversee implementation of a strategic plan for a comprehensive alumni relations program to develop, support, and strengthen relationships among and between alumni and the school. Lead and direct the activities and development of Alumni Relations staff within the Office of Development & Alumni Relations to offer superlative service to alumni. With colleagues in Career Development, Alumni Relations, Communications, IT, and alumni volunteers, oversee development of a vibrant online community and robust portfolio of online resources, including but not limited to an alumni portal, class and regional listservs, online directories, class notes, career and networking resources, giving and engagement opportunities, and school publications. Oversee a vibrant reunion program and work with colleagues in Reunion Giving to develop a unified giving program. Oversee implementation of strategies to further develop Yale SOM's regional presence and alumni activity in key regions, both in the US and internationally. Oversee engagement efforts and programming targeted to educating current students about alumni services and connecting them with alumni. Oversee volunteer engagement strategies and tracking systems. Oversee alumni data management processes and analyses to measure alumni engagement and satisfaction. Lead the development of a robust alumni engagement strategy leveraging Global Network for Advanced Management school's alumni networks, working with counterparts at GNAM schools GNAM volunteer chapter leaders including Yale SOM regional chapter leaders to develop and execute the plan. Serve as primary liaison and relationship manger with the 25 member Yale SOM Alumni Association board of directors. Work with the board on strategic matters that directly concern Yale alumni and seek their support with the implementation of strategic objectives. Work with colleagues in Development in order to accomplish strategic and programmatic goals of the school. Collaborate with colleagues in Admissions, Career Development, Communications, Executive Education, Academic Affairs and Student Life, as well as faculty to identify appropriate opportunities to engage alumni with the current life of the school. Initiate and implement special events and opportunities that offer opportunities for alumni to learn, exchange ideas, and share expertise. Support events both on and off campus, including events with the Dean, faculty and alumni speakers, current Yale SOM students, and class Reunions. Work with such colleagues in the broader University community such as the Yale Alumni Association (YAA), Central Development, Central Information Technology, Alumni Information/Records, International Programs, and alumni relations peers in Yale’s graduate and professional schools to identify appropriate collaboration opportunities, leverage resources, and represent the interests and needs of Yale SOM alumni and the school. Develop and manage annual budget and perform periodic cost and productivity analyses. Other projects and initiatives as assigned, including managing events related to Dean’s visits, domestically and internationally. The following Essential Duties are generic in nature; the information contained in this Position Focus is most relevant to this position.

Essential Duties

  1. Directs one or more functional areas within an administrative department of the University and ensure compliance with University policies and procedures.
  2. Directs analytic and research support for educational policies and planning and develops and approves administrative policies affecting assigned functional areas of the University.
  3. Directs and establishes parameters for major projects for the department and University.
  4. Interprets federal policies and regulations and educates staff and administration about regulations, restrictions, and the legal responsibilities of the University.
  5. Directs and implements policy and program modifications and develops standards to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
  6. Develops and administers an operating budget for the assigned department consistent with University policies and procedures.
  7. Develops cost savings objectives and goals; authorizes major purchases and negotiates contracts that range from routine to complex in nature.
  8. Establishes and implements long- and short-range goals for the functional area consistent with University goals and objectives.
  9. Directs the development of related automated systems to support the function; determines office policies and procedures for use of automated systems.
  10. Directs the evaluation and selection of vendors and negotiates contract details including work steps and pricing with the vendors on behalf of the assigned functional area.
  11. Works with internal and external contacts to solve problems that range from routine to complex in nature.
  12. Represents the University in discussions and negotiations with various governmental agencies.
  13. Directs a staff of exempt and nonexempt employees.
  14. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in related field. Five years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Excellent managerial skills, including coaching, developing staff, delegating techniques and conflict management. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to develop positive working relationships with a broad range of alumni and colleagues.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Excellent leader with a positive and can-do attitude that supports the mission of the school. International experience and/or experience managing stakeholders and connecting communities worldwide highly regarded.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Superior demonstrated written and oral communication and presentation skills. Ability to craft and articulate messages for various audiences. Team-oriented, with a highly-developed sense of customer service.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Familiarity with online alumni communities and resources. Experience forecasting and managing complex budgets.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Ability to work successfully in a fast-paced and changing environment.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Familiarity with business schools, Yale University, and/or a Yale SOM degree. Five to seven years of related experience in alumni relations. Global orientation; experience working across countries and regions, and fluency in more than one language.
