The Department of Portuguese of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites applications for the position of Associate Professor in Intercultural Studies or Literature in Portuguese.

The Department of Portuguese is an established and lively scholarly community that includes speakers of European Portuguese, Brazilian and other varieties of Portuguese. The department offers an undergraduate degree in Portuguese Studies concentrating on Portuguese as a Foreign Language with selected courses in interpretation and translation, foreign language pedagogy, literary studies and history. At the undergraduate level, the Department also teaches Portuguese language within the Faculty of Law and offers elective courses in Portuguese as a foreign language to students from all faculties of the University. At the postgraduate level, the Department offers three MA programmes (a MA in Portuguese Language and Intercultural Studies, a MA in Translation Studies (Portuguese-Chinese) and a MA in Second Language Acquisition) and two PhD areas in (i) Applied Linguistics (Portuguese) and (ii) Literary and Intercultural Studies (Portuguese).

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a PhD in literature in Portuguese or Chinese Occidental Cultural Studies or in a related area of PORTUGUESE STUDIES. Applicants should have a very good record of internationally recognized research and publication and a demonstrated potential for outstanding research. Applicants should also have native or near-native fluency in Portuguese along with experience in teaching of above-mentioned disciplines. A good command of English and Chinese is also preferred.

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty latest by May 2020.

Remuneration

A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP985,600 (approximately USD121,680) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
