The Council on Science and Technology (CST) at Princeton University seeks a bold, visionary Assistant Director who will advance CST initiatives by positioning the StudioLab as an exemplary creative technology space through culturally-relevant programming, synergistic collaborations, and robust educational research. With emphasis on the intersections across STEM, the arts, humanities, and social sciences, the Assistant Director will also engage in teaching and working with faculty to develop or enhance courses that align with the CST mission and utilize the StudioLab in meaningful, original ways.

The Council on Science and Technology fosters education, research, and intellectual exchange that deepen and broaden understanding, experience, and appreciation of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The StudioLab is the CST's creative technology lab that supports innovative courses, projects and research that explore the intersections of STEM with other disciplines. The recently-renovated, flexible 2500 sq. ft. StudioLab houses technology and equipment that include: motion capture, theater lighting, virtual reality, a sound system, projection, sprung flooring, wheeled robots, 3D printers, a laser cutter, a CNC milling machine, a vinyl cutter, an embroidery machine, sewing machines, soldering equipment, Kinect, and Arduinos, among others.
The Assistant Director, StudioLab Initiatives, reports to the Executive Director of the CST. Specific responsibilities include to

  • Develop and implement a coherent vision for the StudioLab that distinguishes it as a unique and inclusive space for creative exploration for all, regardless of prior experience;
  • Explore novel approaches to "making" and "serious play" that value interdisciplinary collaboration and expertise and integrate culturally and societally relevant themes;
  • Cultivate collaborative relationships with colleagues at the CST, at Princeton University, and beyond, resulting in programs that advance STEM literacy;
  • Lead the ongoing, thoughtful evolution of the StudioLab space and its resources;
  • Develop, enhance, and teach rigorous and engaging courses that examine the intersection of STEM and other disciplines using StudioLab resources;
  • Conduct and disseminate robust research on the StudioLab's programs;
  • Provide technical and creative direction, supervision, and training to StudioLab staff as needed to ensure safe, responsible, and inclusive use of the StudioLab;
  • Serve as a key communicator of StudioLab programming by contributing content to the CST website, social media handles, and other publications;
  • Participate in the administration of the CST by attending meetings, providing timely updates, and engaging in CST-sponsored events;
  • Assist the CST Executive Director as needed.

Essential Qualifications

  • Demonstrated successful leadership and teaching experience, preferably in a creative technology space and learning environment.
  • A Ph.D. in STEM, STEM education, or an arts field with emphasis on intersections with STEM is preferred, Master's Degree with exceptional, relevant experience considered;
  • Knowledge and experience with theater technology/technology for performance, rapid prototyping, and creative technology;
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and supervisory skills and a high degree of professionalism and initiative;
  • Commitment to expanding notions of STEM literacy to include other disciplines as a means of engaging stakeholders with varied interests and expertise;
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain productive professional relationships across disciplines;
  • Experience with and/or interest in research on creative learning spaces;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to handle multiple varied and competing priorities;
  • Willingness to work some flexible hours in order to accommodate programs and trainings.
