School of Social and Political Sciences

Location:  Lincoln
Salary:   From £33,797 per annum
Please note this post is full-time and fixed term for four years
Closing Date:   Tuesday 22 October 2019
Interview Date:   Thursday 07 November 2019

An exciting opportunity has arisen for two experienced social scientists to contribute to a new four-year research study in the School of Social and Political Sciences. Applications are invited for two Post Doctoral Research Fellows to contribute to a qualitative longitudinal research study called ‘Following Young Fathers Further’ (FYFF). Funded by Round 2 of the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship scheme, this ambitious and innovative study aims to understand and transform the way society constructs and responds to young fathers (aged 25 and under) in national and international, comparative contexts. Methodologically, the study employs creative, participatory qualitative longitudinal (QL) methods of enquiry. Establishing unique collaborations with national UK charities NSPCC, YMCA, Coram Family and ChildCare and two English local authorities, the study also involves the implementation and real-time evaluation of a novel social intervention designed to promote a more father-inclusive, gender equal policy and practice environment in the UK that is of benefit to young fathers and their families.

The posts will be based in the College of Social Science at the University of Lincoln. The University has established a reputation as one of the most dynamic, fastest growing universities in the UK. Situated in the heart of a beautiful and historic city it has built an international reputation for the quality of its teaching and research. Lincoln is currently ranked 22nd overall in the UK in the The Guardian University Guide and 42nd in the Times Good University Guide 2019. The School of Social and Political Sciences where the posts are based houses Politics and International Relations, Criminology, Social Policy and Sociology. The School has a well established and expanding academic profile in both learning and teaching and research. The FYFF study is an exciting new phase in the expansion of social sciences research at the University of Lincoln.

Offered on a full time basis the posts are available for four years with potential to extend to a further three years, dependent on securing additional UKRI funding through the Future Leaders Fellowship scheme. Ideally the candidate will be available to take up the position by January 2020 when the study commences or as soon as possible thereafter.

Under the leadership of Principal Investigator Dr Anna Tarrant (atarrant@lincoln.ac.uk), the post holders will have direct involvement in shaping the direction of the FYFF study and in delivering significant social outcomes. Research Fellows are responsible for conducting research on the project, as directed by the PI and are expected to operate with a significant degree of autonomy. Further information about the particularities of both posts is provided in the ‘Scope and dimensions of the roles’ section of the attached job description.
