The Boston University Sydney Study Abroad Program has been operating for over 27 years and it is the second largest program in the Boston University Study Abroad network. We have sister programs in more than 20 cities worldwide including London, Quito, Paris, Madrid, Dublin, Geneva and Shanghai. The Sydney program has built a strong reputation since its beginnings in 1992, making participation in the program highly competitive. The students are generally third or fourth year undergraduates and they need to meet stringent academic criteria and entry requirements. There are also opportunities for postgraduates to enrol in our specialist summer programs.

Position Details

Primary Function:                   

The Internship Specialist (Film, Television, & Broadcast Journalism) reports directly to the Internship Director in carrying out their responsibilities. The chief responsibilities include advising and placing a designated cohort of internship students in the areas of film, television, and broadcast journalism. The Internship Specialist is responsible for maintaining positive relationships with existing internship sites and developing new internship opportunities for students.

In the placement period, the Internship Specialist assesses the personality, interests, capabilities and suitability of the student for prospective placements. They will be responsible for preparing, placing and supporting students for (and throughout) their internship experience. Such preparation of a student would include revision of the CV; interview preparation; expectation setting; and advising on professional dress and presentation.

Once the student begins their internship, the role of the Internship Specialist involves close monitoring of their progress in the placement by initiating regular meetings, grading the student’s internship assignments, and communicating with the site supervisor.  During the internship, the Internship Specialist remains a vital link in the chain of communication between the intern and the site.  Should difficulties arise, the Internship Specialist will act as an intermediary to achieve a successful outcome. At the conclusion of the internship, the Internship Specialist is responsible for collecting all site evaluations and reporting grades.

Reports to: The Sydney Program Director

Key Relationships:                     

Acts as an advisor to a select group of students and communicates regularly with the Internship Director and other Internship Specialists on the team to ensure best outcomes for the students.

Experience:

  • Experience serving as a mentor to students and/or like position within a select industry
  • Experience working in/with the film, television, and/or broadcast journalism industries

Training/qualifications (or equivalent experience):

  • A degree in a discipline of relevance to the program and/or use to the position
  • Any relevant technical training

Other:

  • A genuine interest in, and respect for, the students who undertake the program
  • The ability to work closely with colleagues to provide optimal outcomes for the students

Desirable (additional factors which are useful to do the job)

Skills/techniques:

  • Any relevant professional development or training

Experience:

  • A proven track record of internship placement and strong industry links
  • Any relevant industry experience not noted above
  • Experience in Higher Education administration and/or like industry experience

Training/qualifications (or equivalent experience):

  • Degree qualifications in a relevant field
