Job Description

Introduction

As an Applied Physicist specialised in particle detectors, you will join the Experimental Physics (EP) department, specifically the CERN Detector Group of the ATLAS experiment, a general purpose detector exploiting the unique physics potential of the LHC’s new energy domain.

The Tracker section of the Detector Group has a leading role in the construction of the Pixel detector of the ATLAS Tracker Upgrade ITk.

Specifically the section has responsibilities in the ITk Pixel detector of ATLAS:

  • The activities focus on the integration of Pixel modules and services to support structures and their electrical and thermo-mechanical verification before the final detector assembly. The development and implementation of the stave readout and the control system will be essential steps in the preparation of this activity.
  • Towards later phases of the ITk construction, the section will assume a key role in the preparation of the commissioning of the ITk Pixel detector in the ATLAS cavern.
  • In parallel to the construction of the ATLAS ITk Pixel detector we are actively involved in the development of novel detector technologies like monolithic CMOS sensors for future silicon detectors at HL-LHC and experiments beyond HL-LHC.

Functions

You will:

  • Take a leading role in the development and construction of the ATLAS ITk Pixel detector in the context of section’s activities: assembly and qualification tests of ITk Pixel staves with the loading of Pixel modules and services to their mechanical support structures.
  • Prepare the Pixel system in the cavern for detector commissioning.
  • Coordinate the activities in assembly, readout and testing of staves done by physicists, engineers and technicians from CERN’s technical teams, and liaise with colleagues from other production sites.
  • Contribute to the simulation, design and development of novel silicon detector for future vertex detectors in our section’s R&D activities related to Pixel sensor development and qualification.

Qualifications

Master's degree or PhD, or equivalent relevant experience in the field of physics or a related field, with specialisation in particle detectors.

Experience:

  • Proven, successful post-doctoral experience in the development of silicon detectors. Prior experience in the assembly, integration and testing of large silicon detector systems is considered an asset.
  • Experience with hardware and software for semiconductor detectors, detector control and readout.
  • Proven experience in coordinating multi-disciplinary teams of physicists, engineers and technicians.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing data acquisition, data handling and analysis for detector qualification tests.

Technical competencies:

  • Knowledge and application of solid-state based particle detection technologies.
  • Assembly and integration of detectors.
  • Simulation, design and development of (part of) particle accelerators.
  • Analysis and optimization of detector performance.
  • Development of data acquisition, data handling and analysis for detector qualification tests.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Working in teams.
  • Achieving results.
  • Managing self.
  • Communicating effectively.
  • Solving problems.

Language skills:

  • English: spoken and written. Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations.
  • French: willingness to learn the language rapidly.

  • Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
