Job description

The Fluid Dynamics Group within the Centre for Fluid and Complex Systems at Coventry University is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor in numerical/mathematical fluid mechanics to support its growing activities in the fields of convection/stability and flow control.

The Fluid and Complex Systems Research Centre (about 80 members of staff and PhD students, currently supported by a portfolio of external funding GBP 3.7M) gathers fluid dynamicists, physicists, engineers and computer scientists to tackle fundamental, but also real-life problems involving fluids and complexity with mathematical rigour. For example, aside its more traditional forte in fluid dynamics and statistical physics, the centre is also developing novel approaches in engineering fluid mechanics, flow measurement and socio-physics.

The Fluid Dynamics Group currently comprises 15 staff and PhD students and runs projects combining theory, numerical simulations and experiments, supported by a number of grants from research funding bodies (EPSRC, The Leverhulme Trust, the Royal Society...) and international partnerships. It has priority access to extensive on-site high performance computing provisions and runs two experimental facilities: a fluid dynamics lab in Coventry, as well as an experimental platform for the study of flows in very high magnetic fields, in collaboration with the French CNRS and Grenoble University, hosted by CNRS. The group forms part of Coventry University's Mathematics Unit of Assessment (10) for the Research Excellence Framework; 86% of the submission's output was deemed internationally excellent at REF 2014.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach mathematics in the School of Computing Electronics and Mathematics and carry out research activities as member of the Fluid and Complex Systems Research Centre. The Assistant Professor will be expected to lead on industrial applications of rigorous theoretical fluid mechanics in such fields as stability and control. As such the Assistant Professor will not only be expected to produce a scientific contribution to the field of fluid mechanics at the highest level but also to be willing to apply their knowledge to practical problems. At the same time, they will be encouraged to start new directions of research, within the wide remit of fundamental and applied fluid dynamics, in the spirit of collaboration and academic freedom fostered by the centre.

Research activity will involve leading and co-leading theoretical/numerical projects, liaising with experimentalists within the group, supervising PhD students and post-doctoral researchers, and actively seeking funding, from national and international funding agencies, or from private funders.

The teaching role will involve helping to develop and teach courses at undergraduate and graduate level in Mathematics and Physics.

Candidates should hold a PhD or equivalent in any area of fluid mechanics/mathematical physics and have an established track record of publishing their work in the best international journals in the discipline (e.g. Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Journal of Computational Physics, Physical Review Letters etc...). Post-doctoral experience and previous experience with industrial partnerships are essential. Evidence of previous commitment to attract research funding from major agencies or private funders will be an advantage.

Informal enquiries are encouraged, please contact Professor Alban Pothérat (alban.potherat@coventry.ac.uk, +44(0)2477 65 88 65).
