Detailed Description

Applications are invited for one open ended term appointment at Assistant Professor level (Grade 8) to contribute mostly to the teaching of undergraduate Biology students, but possibly also postgraduate, within the Institute of Life and Earth Sciences. We particularly encourage applicants with demonstrated expertise in microbiology and/or molecular biology / medical microbiology. The successful candidate will be an inspiring teacher with excellent communication skills who will help motivate and support our students in achieving academic excellence.

The successful candidate will contribute to the organisation and teaching of courses covering key topics in Biology, in particular microbiology, molecular biology, and possibly medical microbiology within the undergraduate curriculum, but this may also include postgraduate content. The remit will include the delivery and assessment of lectures, tutorials and laboratory classes; the successful candidate will train graduate demonstrators to help support laboratory and other practical classes and he/she will also provide supplementary supervision to final year students and Masters students carrying out research project work.

The appointee will work alongside experienced members of academic staff in carrying out duties that relate to the organisation and delivery of undergraduate, and possibly postgraduate, teaching, academic student support and teaching administration.

The successful candidate will have a PhD and post-doctoral experience in a cognate subject area. He/she will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills and will be enthusiastic about interacting with taught students and supporting their academic development. Preference will be given to a candidate with a demonstrated ability to facilitate student learning and/or experience of teaching.

It is expected the successful candidate will have experience and track record in the publication of scientific refereed manuscripts and track record or potential in attracting research funding. It is expected that the successful candidate will progress to become a fully independent principal investigator, attracting their own funding, building their own research team and complementing the expertise of existing academics within the Institute of Life and Earth Sciences.

Key duties and responsibilities

The successful appointee will be expected to undertake the following:

  • Contribute to the preparation, delivery and evaluation of students in the classroom or laboratory setting for a range of Biology courses (at SCQF levels 7-10) which cover topics in the areas of Microbiology, Molecular Biology and/or Medical Microbiology. Contributions to teaching at postgraduate level (SCQF level 11) are also planned.
  • Prepare, administer and compile assessment of coursework and examinations, under the supervision of experienced members of the academic staff team.
  • Undertake basic administrative duties including course-level record keeping; attending academic committees dealing with course and programme-related issues; maintaining office hours to advise and support students.
  • Supervise honours level and MSc level projects.
  • Act as supervisor to student dissertations.
  • Undertake relevant training courses to develop and enhance teaching skills.
  • Undertake research, submit research funding applications, supervise PhD students, submit scientific manuscripts for publication.

Education, qualifications and experience


  • A PhD in Biology/Life Sciences or a cognate subject discipline related to Biology/Life Sciences.
  • Knowledge and experience of microbiology and/or molecular biology and/or medical microbiology.
  • Previous experience of undergraduate teaching in Biology or cognate discipline.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to engage with students in the delivery of lectures, tutorials and practical classes.
  • An in-depth understanding of own specialism to enable the development of new knowledge and understanding within the field.
  • Versatility and willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues.
  • Proven record or clear potential for independent research, published scientific manuscripts and research grant success.


  • Postdoctoral experience in Biology or a cognate subject discipline related to Biology/Life Sciences.
  • Experience in the preparation and delivery of lectures, tutorials and web-based assessment.
  • Familiarity with learning management software such as Blackboard or equivalent.
  • Experience of providing academic support to student groups.
  • Experience of working in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Ability to operate at the cross-disciplinary boundaries of microbiology and molecular biology and allied fields.
