Overview:

The Particle Physics Research Centre (PPRC) has a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work on the Zero support Mass Detectors (ZMD) R&D project.  The aim of ZMD is to explore the feasibility of making silicon detector modules using ultrathin silicon sensors for application to a future large area tracking system. The successful applicant will be expected to make significant personal contributions to the ZMD programme, testing sensors, making modules, and characterising performance, as well as ensuring data is properly logged in our database.

Applicants should have, or be about to gain, a PhD in experimental particle physics or similar field and have experience of active participation in test-beam, detector operations or construction work for a particle or nuclear physics experiment or equivalent. Strong hardware skills are essential and a good knowledge of C++, Python, or LabView is desirable. The post will be located at the Queen Mary Mile End Campus in London but may require travel to other locations in the UK during and overseas.  The candidate is expected to work in various laboratories and workshops, and adhere to relevant health and safety regulations at all times.

The post is funded by the STFC and is full time, starting as soon as possible with an end date of funding 31/03/2021. Starting salary will be £31,613-£34,220 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days’ annual leave, a pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
