Position Overview

The Metadata Librarian contributes to the systematic organisation of the Library's print, electronic and digital repository collections by providing access to the information resources supporting the University’s teaching, learning and research programs. The incumbent is responsible for applying relevant metadata standards to create complex copy and original metadata records for a variety of information resource formats. The incumbent supports the management of the Library's collections by undertaking data analysis and quality control and contributing to specialist digitisation projects.

The Division of Student Life plays a critical role in driving and meeting the University’s objectives and strategic intent. Working closely with and across the Colleges and Divisions, and in collaboration with the Office of the Provost, the Division has a focus on cross-institutional academic quality, innovation in learning and teaching, efficiency of services, domestic recruitment, suitability of learning infrastructure, and overall student experience.

Library and Information Services

The Library and Information Services Directorate provides innovative, high quality, client-focused library services including research skills, digital and information literacies and use of technologies; information resources, scholarly and cultural collections; and learning facilities that contribute to and enhance the University’s learning, teaching, and research priorities. The Directorate has a library and information commons at the Townsville and Cairns campuses and delivers a wide range of online resources and services to all campus and study locations and to clients both on and offcampus.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Create metadata records for published and unpublished collections, in accordance with current international, national and local standards, in a range of subject areas across all formats for the library management and repository systems. 
  2. Contribute to the management of electronic resources in the library management systems through the bulk import of metadata records, accurate processing and transfer of records, and metadata tagging to provide access to the collections. 
  3. Analyse and resolve metadata and access issues based on established standards, policies and procedures to facilitate access and discoverability by University staff and students.
  4. Maintain data integrity through quality control and adherence to national and international standards for metadata to ensure consistency and accuracy of records in the library management systems. 
  5. Contribute to the management of the Library’s physical and electronic collections by participating in collection management and relegation projects including the collation of data and the preparation of reports. 
  6. Communicate and liaise with Library staff and University researchers and academics to resolve access, copyright and publication or publishing issues.
  7. Create digital objects for the NQHeritage repository, including specialised digital image production from original documents, ensuring integrity of files, adherence to standards and creation of accurate metadata in collaboration with Special Collections staff, and providing training to team members as required.  
  8. Contribute to the continuous improvement and effective functioning of the Information Resource team in order to meet organisational objectives, participate in planning, development of procedures, undertake projects, and maintain statistics and records

Generic Accountabilities

There are generic responsibilities that apply to all James Cook University staff.

  1. The Metadata Librarian is required to observe the lawful and reasonable directions, policies and decisions of the University Council, understand and comply with the Enterprise Agreement, the Statutes and Rules of the University, and other appropriate University authorities, as in force from time to time.
  2. The Metadata Librarian is required to demonstrate a personal commitment to ensure personal safety and the safety of others and contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. This includes the effective implementation and compliance with James Cook University WHS policies, procedures and safe systems of work, together with all relevant legislation, duties and obligations.
  3. The Metadata Librarian is required to exercise proper discretion in all matters affecting the well-being of the University which involve public writing or speaking in accordance with the University’s Code of Conduct.

Special Conditions

  • It is a requirement of this position to be eligible for associate membership of the Australian Library and Information Association.

Selection Criteria

Selection and appointments will be assessed against selection criteria.

Essential

  1. Degree qualification in a library or information related discipline without relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education and/or training. 
  2. Demonstrated well developed written, oral and interpersonal communications skills to build and maintain effective working relationships in a collegial environment and deliver quality, responsive client centred services.
  3. Demonstrated proficiency in the application of metadata, cataloguing and classification standards and metadata schema (e.g. RDA, DDC, Dublin Core).
  4. Demonstrative effective organisational and time management skills with the ability to manage workflow and prioritise workloads to achieve team goals.
  5. Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to work with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  6. Demonstrated proficiency with relevant workplace technologies and experience with library management systems.

  1. General knowledge of copyright for library information resources
  2. Relevant experience working with institutional repositories
