Position Focus:

Mental Health and Counseling (MHC) at Yale Health supports undergraduate, graduate, and professional students by providing individual and group psychotherapy as well as psychiatry services to a diverse, talented and passionate student body of over 13,000 individuals.  MHC employs over 30 clinicians consisting of LCSWs, psychologists and psychiatrists and also provides high quality training to psychiatry residents, psychology post-docs and post-MSW fellows.  MHC is a vibrant and energetic environment that values collaboration and initiative and is looking for candidates who want to be an integral part of the Yale Health community. MHC is part of Yale Health, which is a multidisciplinary health maintenance organization located on the campus of Yale University.

The Staff Psychologist provides individual therapy, group therapy and couples therapy in Yale Mental Health and Counseling. They assess and diagnose mental illness. They provide culturally competent treatment to patients of varied racial/ ethnic identities, socioeconomic backgrounds and sexual/ gender identities. They administer and interpret psychological tests and develop and present written test results and analysis. Serve as liaison to patients, families and clinical staff on issues and programs pertaining to psychological services. They serve as a liaison to Yale community and develop and deliver outreach programs to the Yale community. They adhere to psychology code of ethical conduct and abide by laws affecting the practice of psychology. 

Additional responsibilities call for incumbent to: Plan and coordinate individual and group therapy. Evaluate, assess and modify psychological treatment plans. Participate in the development of short and long-term patient treatment. Maintain patient charts and reports. Provide psychological services to patients of differing cultural backgrounds, identity configurations, and genders. Provide mental health emergency coverage. Participate in after-hours on call coverage in rotation. Assess and evaluate the purpose and value of psychological testing and treatment. Establish positive relations with student patients in order to administer appropriate treatment. Assist in the development of materials for educational programs and seminars for professional staff. Interact with internal contacts such as patients, clinicians, social workers and other medical staff, administrators with regard to clinical programs and program development. Interact with external contacts such as outpatient therapists, residential treatment centers and other mental health institutions.

This position is Full-Time; 37.5 HRS; Weekdays 8:30-5:00 Flexible Schedule. Early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays/recess periods may also be required. Participates in on-call rotation.

Essential Duties

  1. Assesses and evaluates the purpose and value of psychological testing and treatment and recommends changes to testing tools or treatment plans.
  2. Conduct patient evaluations and assesses patient progress or acceptability or psychotherapy programs. Analyzes data and psychological testing results.
  3. Provides individual, group, and family therapy within various clinical and healthcare research departments.
  4. Evaluates, assesses and modifies psychological treatment plans.
  5. Participates in the development of short and long term patient treatment. Maintains patient charts and reports.
  6. Plans and coordinates the therapeutic activities of an individual or group.
  7. Oversees the development of individual and group psychotherapy plans.
  8. Establishes positive relations with patients in order to administer appropriate treatment.
  9. Develops of materials for educational programs and seminars for professional staff.
  10. Serves as liaison to patients, families and clinical staff on issues and programs pertaining to psychological services.
  11. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Ph. D or Psy. D in Clinical Psychology and one year experience in a clinical field or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Experience working in a college mental health setting.

Required Licenses or Certifications

Licensure as a Clinical Psychologist in the State of Connecticut.
