Lead role opportunity created following the launch of a powerful new research, consultancy and innovation partnership for potatoes in Scotland
We are seeking an experienced, high profile potato consultant or researcher to lead a new potato innovation partnership. SRUC, SASA and The James Hutton Institute, the major Scottish knowledge, consultancy and research centres for potatoes in Scotland, have joined forces to launch a new potato initiative. The new partnership brings together the combined complementary skills and outputs of the three institutions to create a world-leading centre for all aspects of potato, scientific, KE and consultancy activities. The strategic partnership, branded ScottishPotatoes.Org will create a platform for cooperation with all external stakeholders in the sector, making research rapidly accessible to the industry and promote Scottish knowledge and innovations on the world stage

The successful applicant will set out and action an appropriate strategy for research activities and bring together the combined skills and outputs of the three institutions to create a world leading centre for all aspects of potato scientific, KE and consultancy activity, with a focus on making connections between research, production and commercialization. You will develop the combined brand for ScottishPotatoes.Org and attract joint funding for research, creating a platform for cooperation with all external stakeholders in the sector in order to make research more readily accessible and relevant to the industry. The successful applicant will identify the key industry issues and set out a program of thought leadership to engage industry in areas of research. They will also be responsible for identifying commercial opportunities that arise from appropriate research and for supporting any spin off ventures, products and services.

We are seeking a decisive leader with expertise in research, field trials, and proven management skills, combined with strong business acumen. There will be an emphasis on commercialising research outputs and on developing whole industry initiatives around key industry challenges.

We seek an applicant with expertise in research, field trials and management skills who is able to converse across the whole spectrum of potato matters: economics, storage, production, varieties, pathology and the latest research.

The ideal candidate will be experienced in multi-stakeholder environments with a proven capability in communicating research to industry. They will have significant experience within relevant research and/ or agronomy organisations and be familiar and capable of bridging the gap between the needs of industry and research undertaken.

In addition, they will have a track record of attracting significant research funding and in the concise and punctual delivery of the research and the interpersonal skills to lead a dispersed team to a set of agreed objectives and performance measures.

It is expected that the post holder will be employed by SRUC (although a contract with the James Hutton Institute may be discussed) but can be based at an appropriate SRUC or James Hutton Institute location, likely to be either Edinburgh or Invergowrie. A current driving licence is essential as travel to rural locations will be required.
