Position Focus:

Under the direction of the Technical Director for the Clinical Research Support Laboratory (CRSL), the Lab Coordinator supports research in clinical trials by coordinating research lab schedules for protocol mandated biological collections and ensures the accurate set up of patient-specific lab supplies. Using a high degree of independent judgment and extensive communication with Clinical Trials Office staff and other research staff, performs daily reviews of patient schedules from more than ten disease-aligned research teams in both inpatient and outpatient settings, as well as those from satellite chemotherapy units outside of the New Haven campus by interpreting lab templates for hundreds of oncology studies according to defined criteria. Identifies which specific collection kits and supplies are required and prepares them according to set procedures. Coordinates with external couriers and other labs within the department for the successful preparation and delivery of biological samples.

Essential Duties

  1. Researches and collects data through site or home visit intakes; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for research projects.
  2. Interprets, synthesizes, and analyzes data using scientific or statistical techniques. Modifies and plans research experiments, procedures, tests, or survey instruments. Assists in research design.
  3. Writes and edits material for publication and presentation. Reports on status of research activities. Oversees and instructs research and support staff on technical procedures, equipment operation, and laboratory maintenance.
  4. Schedules and coordinates research activities. Identifies and recruits study participants. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies.
  5. May assist in preparing financial information and monitoring budgets.
  6. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.

Required Education and Experience

Two years of related work experience in the same job family and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Strong computer skills, including intermediate knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Outlook scheduling. Ability and willingness to learn new software.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Excellent interpersonal skills and superb verbal and written communication skills; ability to work well in both a team setting and independently with staff within and outside the immediate work unit, including professionals external to Yale.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Strong analytical and critical thinking skills; ability to comprehend highly detailed lab templates with specific technical and study protocol terminology; ability to comprehend,extract relevant information, and compare with lab templates an array of extensive, highly detailed, patient schedules from numerous different disease-aligned research teams.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to multi-task and shift priorities in a fast-paced and changing environment meeting daily deadlines without any adverse effects. Highly organized and possessing a high level of attention to detail.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Demonstrated ability with ensuring strict patient confidentiality according to HIPAA regulations in a professional or educational setting.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in a biological science or health related field. Experience with clinical trials, knowledge of oncology terminology, coordinating and working in a high-volume setting and OnCore clinical research management software system.Proficiency with EPIC or similar Electronic Medical Records databases (EMR). Intermediate ability with MS PowerPoint.
