Position Focus:

In 1971, Yale University began a unique and historic experiment providing health services to its facility, staff and students through a multidisciplinary health maintenance organization located on campus. Now, 47 years later, Yale Health has more than 37,000 members including students, staff, faculty and their families who come from every state in the country and almost every country in the world.

Our state-of-the-art facility at 55 Lock Street, built in 2010, is where our members receive most of their care. It is a 144,000 square foot medical facility with over 90 exam rooms, a 24/7  Acute Care Department, a 17-bed inpatient facility with two negative pressure rooms, a diagnostic imaging suite including MR and CT scan, x-ray and ultrasound and a full-service retail pharmacy. It houses our 150+ providers, including 111 primary and consulting physicians.

We are currently seeking an experienced Medical Assistant to join the department of Dermatology. The Medical Assistant will work as a member of the Yale Health Dermatology/Specialty Care team by providing seamless, coordinated and compassionate care at each patient encounter. They will provide care to patients as directed by nursing and clinical staff; assist the clinician with the daily operations of clinic.;maintain a comfortable, orderly, safe and clean environment for patient care; prepare exam rooms; select and lay out medical supplies; maintain medical equipment in good working order; prepare patients for examinations;.measure and record vital signs; collect pertinent data relevant to the patient visit; provide routine information related to medical treatments and procedures; prepares for the day/same-day clinic by doing chart prep, electronic medical record (EMR) review for results and anticipate data patient/clinician needs for visit; access the EMR as appropriate; response to task and messages directed to medical assistance staff in a timely manner; record and report patient information; order and maintain inventory of medical supplies for the department; restock exam rooms.; maintain dirty and clean utility areas; perform point of care testing/CLIA testing for patient encounters including, but not limited to: ECGs, PVRs, Hba1c, urine, and HCG; perform clerical functions and provide assistance to clinicians and nursing staff in support of critical activities (i.e. scheduling/rescheduling appointments; participates in the daily weekly and monthly department QI activities; handle/process specimens according to organization/department policy and procedure; assist clinician with sterile and clean procedures; setup, assist and cleanup of procedures.

This position is generally Monday - Friday between 8 am - 5:30 pm.  Occasional early mornings, evenings, weekends or holidays may also be required.  Schedule will be contingent on department needs.

Essential Duties

  1. Maintains comfortable, orderly, safe, and clean environment.
  2. Prepares patients for examinations. Provides routine information related to medical treatments and procedures.  
  3. Measures and records vital signs. Collects specimens. Prepares examining rooms. Selects and lays out medical supplies.  
  4. Maintains medical equipment. Records and reports patient information. Retrieves laboratory test results and patient files. 
  5. Escorts patients and visitors. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies.  
  6. Performs clerical functions related to medical activities.

Required Education and Experience

Two years of related work experience and a high school level education; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated ability in an ambulatory environment.

Effective interpersonal and communication skills with emphasis on customer service and professionalism.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated ability to perform in stressful situations and works well on teams.

Excellent attendance, reliability and punctuality; teamwork, flexibility and ability to multi-task.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Data entry skills associated with the use of computers in the scheduling or similar program.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Experience in Dermatology, with Epic and with set up and assisting with office based surgical procedures and biopsies. Current BCLS certification.

Required Licenses or Certifications

Certification by the American Association of Medical Assistants or American Registry of Medical Assistants (or ability to get certification/registration within 90 days of employment).
