Stanford University's Continuing Studies Program (CSP) is a premier adult learning program offering more than 600 courses, workshops, and seminars to more than 17,000 students annually. The mission of Stanford Continuing Studies is to share the rich educational resources of Stanford University with adult students living in the Bay Area and beyond.

The Catalogue Editor & Production Manager is responsible for the production of the program’s course catalogues from inception to distribution. S/he will also independently manage relationships with external design and print teams as well as multiple copy editors. S/he reports to the Senior Manager of Course Planning.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Accurate and timely development of Stanford Continuing Studies’ 100+ page course quarterly catalogues.
  • Manage the entire process of the production of the quarterly course catalogue, from managing 150-200+ submissions quarterly, through tracking revision from multiple stake holders, design and layout, meticulous editing and revising, to publication.
  • Independently direct and supervise the work of freelance copywriters, copy editors and proofreaders, and prepare the course catalogue for design and production.
  • Consolidate edits from multiple sources including program deans, senior staff, text authors, and copy editors and make editorial decisions, as needed.
  • Oversee style guide & writing conventions. Write, develop, and edit catalogue text with adherence to style guide.
  • Establish a production schedule that allows time for the development of accurate material and meets the publication deadlines required to give students time to select and enroll in courses.
  • Oversee quality assurance review at all stages of the production of the quarterly course catalogue. Curate catalogue artwork and clear cover and interior image copyright, review color press proofs, mark up changes, and communicate edits to printer and graphic designer. Sign off on final proofs and authorizes press dates.
  • Independently serve as liaison to the catalogue’s key contributors exercising judgement and discretion in decision-making related to the development of a successful publication.
  • Responsible for adhering to the established budget of more than $300,000. Administer print bid process regularly. Works closely with external constituents including vendors and consultants to ensure cost efficiency, deadlines, and high quality of materials, e.g., design firm, printer, mailhouse. Regularly reviews possible cost-saving modifications to the catalogue (e.g., exploring other paper options, page count changes, binding, etc.).
  • Regularly review and recommend modifications to the production process as part of a continuous improvement focus (e.g., exploring new editing programs, project management software, etc.)

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong editorial and proofreading skills.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple deadlines. Ability to effectively manage work flow.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

In addition, our preferred requirements include:

  • Proficiency with Adobe Suite, including InDesign or InCopy.
  • Advanced experience managing print projects, possessing a strong knowledge of traditional and digital printing.
  • Thorough knowledge and hands-on experience with all phases of book production, including in-depth knowledge of desktop publishing and the basic rudiments of art and design.
  • Experience in implementing document design templates.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in FTP, file conversion, and printing processes. Experience working on a project team.
  • Ability to interface with internal departments and external book publication/production community.
  • Ability to supervise the work of others.
